How much do you think you'd need to earn to live "comfortably" in Australia?

I'm from Brisbane, currently living in UK, but am thinking about moving back to Oz in the near future. I read today that an average mortgage of $300K would have weekly mortgage repayments of more than $500.

I reckon that is a very conservative estimate of mortage repayments given the rise in house prices over the last few years.

How much do you think you'd need to earn, before tax, to live "comfortably"?

we have been here for a few months now and are looking to buy in 12 months or so, we i think.. have decided to go towards toogoolawah becasue we can get big avreage for little money. (well in Uk terms) about $450,000 for 30 acres and a house on it. Dh earns $100000 and what with relocation costs it is still tight. savings are non existant at the moment. However think we could cope fine on that if we needed to. The bank would offer us a huge mortgae, but dont want that option. so we will aim to live futher out. Dh gets the train every day and has a seat i believe every day. his only complaint has been this week that the air con hasnt been working! so a hot run home.. oh and the driver forgot to stop at a station on the way! made him laugh but maybe not if you were waiting for the train!
