I lived in Naples when I was a teenager - dad working for NATO. I loved it there, but the seedy side of life is never far from the surface. Old Naples is fascinating - hundreds of alleys and narrow streets with weird and wonderful shops. It is lovely to go to the Cloisters for some respite from the hectic streets. Vomero is more upmarket, and you get to it via a funiular railway (fun for the kids). It's a great place to wonder around, but don't take valuables!

The food is amazing - couldn't recommend a single place. Even a cheap bowl of pasta in a little tratorria will be fab. Pozzuoli is great for fish restaurants and has a brilliant fish market - they juggle squid!

Go to Capri for beautiful views and ridiculous designer boutiques. Ischia is good for beaches.

Kids will love Vesuvius and if they're old enough to do a fair bit of walking, Pompei is awe inspiring and fun.

Will have a think about other places - got to go...

Am very envious by the way!
