Will you visit the UK this summer? (covid)

I'm British, but I live in my husband's home country with our 2 young kids.

I haven't been back to the UK since covid started as this country has strict hotel quarantine on return, which I'm just not prepared to do with 2 young kids.

It's now been lifted, so we can do quarantine at home, so I should be ready and happy to go to the UK, but I'm just so worried about the covid situation in the UK at the moment and the airports closing.

A lot of people say omicron is just like a slight cold, but my mum says quite a few people have told her that they were really quite sick with it and obviously some people are still dying (my parents are high-risk).

I just wonder if anyone else is hesitating to travel to the UK for similar reasons?

Also, I know there is a covid section and I wondered about posting there but I really wanted to hear what people who live abroad think as I think people in the UK maybe have a different perspective on things.

We just got back from the U.K. as well, an absolutely fantastic trip. The flight was easy, Heathrow was so calm and quick that we surprised my parents who were still getting coffee as we were through so quickly! 40 minutes from landing to walking out the airport.
Loved every minute, didn’t want to come back.

Ozgirl, we were on a lot of Australia Covid threads together in the early days and I just want to say I'm SO glad you made it back and saw your family.

We're heading to Australia next week for our first trip back since the pandemic, I'm so excited but utterly terrified that something will go wrong.

@JassyRadlett thank you! I hope you have a wonderful trip too. I was also really worried and nervous about something going wrong as there were so many horror stories about flight cancellations etc but once I was on the plane it all felt “normal” (despite masks as we flew with Cathay). I have school kids too and so dreaded them coming home with covid or the flu just before we left.
my youngest son did actually get sick in the U.K. but not with covid - he had an eye infection that needed hospital treatment. Well even that was dealt with brilliantly, I can’t praise the nhs highly enough!
Apparently there is a lot of covid here in Aus at the moment but people are wearing masks and it’s quite quiet around the shops although I haven’t been into town.
Have a brilliant trip and don’t worry about covid too much - loads of my friends travelled in the holidays and I only know of one who caught covid.

Hurraaaaahhhhh for the vaccination rollout (and I remember @JassyRadlett championing this in style). Honestly, there were so many times when I wondered if we would ever get back to normal. Isn't it wonderful that we can now travel freely and hug each other. ❤

I hope that everyone is having a good summer! We made it to the UK and are having a blast! Eating so many foods that we had forgotten about, on a tour of everywhere 99er related, and the weather is a blast! (I know, I know, it's a heatwave, but I usually begrudge summers in the UK for the crappy weather).

So we have hit British beaches, discovered body boarding, progressed to surfing. I am genuinely going to be sad to leave this weekend.

No COVID so far either. Phew!

(That said, we did drive over and not fly. Have head horror stories from friends who flew. Had to show our residence permits to the French side of customs at Calais. Let's see what it's like going back fromDover)

We were over for 6 weeks, lots of going out to busy places and seeing people and we didn't get covid (i didn't get ill at all and i usually come down with something when travelling so got really lucky), hope you don't either.
