9-month job offer in Spain

I've been offered a 9 month contract to work in Spain starting Sept.
I'm currently employed as an ESOL tutor on a term time contract. I love the work but I've always wanted to live abroad for a while. Now I've got the chance and I'm afraid. I don't speak Spanish and I'm no spring chicken. Mortgage is paid. What would you do?

Do it! I live in Spain and where I live most people speak English. You can easily pick up some phrases as you go.
I have lived here for 6 years now and wouldn't go back. Happy to answer any questions xx

Thank you so much. I start Spanish lessons next week. I keep saying it's only a short time if it all goes belly up.
Why is it special for you?

Where in spain? What do you want us to say.. encourage you to try it out, or support you to be able to say no? Genuine question?

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 19/06/2021 08:48

Ps.. being afraid is normal and not a reason to say no. Do you know the book "Feel the fear and fo it anyway ?"

Gaelforce · 19/06/2021 14:43

I feel guilty because my siblings will be looking after my elderly mum while I'm off galavanting - as they would see it.
I feel that it's a little selfish.
It's near Granada and I do want to go and my husband and grown up DDs are very supportive . Dh will come out for a few months. He works from home. I just want to change up my life. I don't want another winter watching Netflix. I want an adventure. And no , I haven't read that book but will google it now.

Good luck with the Spanish lessons Smile

Enjoy. The book is old but you may find it helpful. It's by Susan Jeffers. An 80s classic.
Enjoy the adventure @Gaelforce

Do it! I've done it and survived. Such a great experience.

Do it!

Granada and the province is stunning, one of my favourite places in the world.

As you will have a job, you will make friends with a colleague or two easily and it’s an amazing opportunity to pick up another language. Spanish is relatively easy to learn.

Don’t let it slip past you. You say siblings, so that’s more than one person shouldering the care of your mum for 9 months.

I’d want my daughter to do it!

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2021 10:22

Yeah go. I did it in my 20s and had a great time. Any colleagues you come across will likely be much younger than you but that shouldn’t put you off.
