How to start looking a high school in Fort Lauderdale

I will be in Fort Lauderdale with my “8th grade” DD for 6 months. I have literally no idea how to start looking for a good high school for her. I have heard a lot of negative stories but I am sure there must be good schools if only I knew where to start. Can anyone help?

I am in another state but I would imagine it would’ve the same.

The school will be assigned by where you live. You may have some options for choice schools or special curriculum schools but if it’s in year schools be I don’t know if you would have those choices.

Unless you’re talking private school in which case you’ll have many more choices, but public schools tend to have a strict catchment boundary, here even if you move out of it you move schools.

Also worth mentioning that the situation schools here currently is very mixed. In my state, most schools are only offering remote or hybrid classes for this year. I believe it varies considerably by area - some
states are fully open, others still pretty restricted. I’d find out the local situation and consider your options from there.

You need to contact Broward County and discuss registration at one of their high schools. You will need to provide some evidence that your child has been schooled to the right level to enter in 8th Grade (if they have been in the English education system, they should be fine, but Math classes can be very different.) Broward have a handy immigrant guide to help you understand the registration requirements (www.browardschools.com/Page/38611 ) - including vaccination records if your county requires them. Normally you can find which school you are zoned to here: www.browardschools.com/Page/39636 but programs are available to choose a more appropriate school if you want to.
Happy to provide extra help if you need it!

Thank you. I guess the first question is if I actually have any options as you say.

8th grade is the last year of middle school, not high school.

Shows how much I have to learn!

Are you working with a realtor to locate housing? The realtor should be able to help you choose a neighborhood with good schools. It is part of the selling/renting point for homes since people want to live where the schools are good.

Are you moving for work? The HR department in the US and local employees should also be a good source of information on the best schools.
