Coronavirus in Asia - for those who live there

What is the situation where you are?

Here - Singapore. School is taking temperature, travel disclosure and enforced leave of absence for anyone who has been to, or had a visitor from, mainland China.

People seem to be mostly going about their lives, but many in masks. Coronavirus is topic of conversation no. 1.

I'm not sure what we all really think will happen next. Singapore has done an incredible job of confining it and tracing. But is it confined? Who knows.

Friends in China are in a very different situation. Some stuck on holiday after cny. Some on lockdown.

Friends in Malaysia, similar to Singapore really.

How are you guys all doing?

Sad poor Mickey...Wink

yes indeed - very stressful.
I work for a company, but I have friends who have their own businesses (like language schools, and interpreting freelancers) who could well be in trouble if this carries on.
Language schools are looking into Skype and Zoom for online lessons, which could be a solution...

HK.
Schools closed till 20 April, at the earliest.
Classes are continuing online as per the school timetables and have been since schools closed in February.
There is an expectation among some parents that teachers will not take any Easter and summer holidays this year to make up for schools being closed.

Tintinofbeans · 28/02/2020 05:37

Easter classes are not a great solution. It's not good for the kiss's mental health to stay skied to a screen indoors for weeks and weeks.
Here the online learning is fine, not as good as school but fine. They'll make up the time eventually.
I feel sorry for the exam classes, it must be stressful for them.

Tintinofbeans · 28/02/2020 05:38

Kids' mentall health of course!

My dd’s School in Jiangsu province is due to reopen on 16th March. Dd and I are in the uk and dh is in HK living in a hotel and working in company office there.
Dd’s School has one week off for Qing Ming holiday, but this has now been moved to next week with no online learning. teachers of grade 12 students will not take any holiday due to preparing students for IB exams.

@BlackCatSleeping surprised people in Japan are hoarding loo roll when the country is so famous for its smart toilets!

BlackCatSleeping · 28/02/2020 12:32

The Japanese government have advised that unnecessary to stockpile toilet paper, but people are still going crazy. A lot of shops are sold out.

So this is happening....

My son is trying to convince me that it extends to our area and he will have to stay home playing Minecraft and watching YouTube all weekend. Wink

I have stocked up on food basics just in case things get bad, but I’m hopeful it will be ok in terms of food shortages. We have plenty of toilet paper, so no need to worry about that at least!

Parents who believe teachers will sacrifice their summerer holidays are crazy, every school will have a natural turnover of staff who will be ending their contracts in June/July... What do they think will happen then? 🙄
Schools want to retain their staff right now in China, not lose them. I believe a lots of schools have asked for the April breaks to be taken now, which I guess most people can understand, but the summer one, I very much doubt that would happen at any reputable school.

(Although things are so unpredictable now, who the hell knows?!😂)

ShanghaiDiva · 29/02/2020 14:22

I would not want the summer vacation to be sacrificed. I think we all need time to get over this nightmare (parents, students and teachers).
