Specifically if you were moving from the other side of the world and arriving with very little.
Local specialities, handy hints?

That really depends on what 'arriving with very little' means. And what the circumstances are. And which country they are arriving in.

I'd want shampoo, washing up liquid, clothes wash, toothpaste. Ideally some decent tea and coffee -but is that a cultural thing? I can't think of anything more welcoming to a UK person moving abroad than some really good quality teabags, alongside lots of local delicacies, so there's a balance between things you could get homesick for and new experiences. Fresh bread and juice are usually welcome, as well as fruit, milk and some staple foods.

Would also want a folder of tips on the local area. Local transport, good places to meet new people, best cafes and restaurants, gyms, pools etc as well as some basics on social etiquette - whether or not to greet strangers and how to greet them. things like: Stand on the right on tube escalators; use your debit card to tap in on buses (no need to tap out) That sort of thing, to demystify daily life.

Brilliant, thank you.
They are relocating for work, but their stuff will take several weeks to arrive. Have already prepared a local tips thing with public transport, driving rules, shops, rubbish collection, emergency numbers etc.
Had thought of staples but not washing up liquid etc. Will also buy some local specialities for them to try

Sounds like you are giving them a really warm and helpful welcome.
