Luxembourg schools and autism

We are considering a move to lux with OH’s work.
Our main worry is for our daughter. She is non-verbal and has autism, and communicates brilliantly with Makaton signing and PECS picture cards. She’s due to start reception in September in a mainstream UK school with one to one support.

Can anyone give me any advice about special needs education in Lux? I wonder if it’s going to be a deal breaker.

Hello

The mainstream private English schools in Lux are really not set up for children with that degree of disability.

In fact a couple reject outright children with even minor issues. :(

You would probably be looking at Special Ed.

The good thing Is though the schools in Luxembourg are incredibly well funded and the health system is second to none. No waiting lists. Normally you can see a specialist within days and can self refer.

The best thing to do is to speak to the Ministry of Education’s SEN unit. They are there to guide parents and am sure they will be able to help.

They actually have a service to specifically help children with autism.

You can find their details here - the site is in French but phone number is at the bottom of the page and they will speak English.

They will also be able to help you get a school place in the school best suited to your child’s needs. I would suggest also reaching out to Michel LUCIUS primary and the International School in Junglister which are state run English langage primaries.
