Should I take a running buggy to Singapore?

We're actually moving with very little, just our suitcases, not shipping anything.

We have a 20mo toddler and a very expensive £400 running buggy that we love and run with in many muddy off road runs. I was considering taking it as luggage even though it will mean taking one less suitcase. I have this image of my DH taking my son out for runs by the beach.

Is it a bit silly to sacrifice so much luggage space for this? We also have a very compact stroller that we're taking with us on the plane. Is it too hot to run for long across East Coast? I think the all terrain giant wheels won't be tested much in the urban environment. But I feel sad at the thought that the buggy will be outgrown by the time we come back.

Just pay for extra suitcases? Why would you not take it?

I think you'd want to research a bit more. Buggies and sand are not generally compatible IME. And Singapore is really hot. Like you sweat a puddle just standing still. But my buggy experience is out of date and I don't know Singapore so find out.

It's bloody hot and sweaty, but I used to do outdoor fitness classes on the East Coast donuts perfectly possible! I'd imagine you wouldn't expect to run on the actual beach but there are good long paths running along the coast that would be pretty good for running with a buggy.

Can you look at ship my bag, or DHL, just to cost up sending some stuff across. You may find you xan take the buggy as one luggage piece, and ship out the other bits in a box. 2 suitcases between 3 of you really doesn't sound like much....

Most airlines allow you to travel with 2 items of baby items ie buggy, travel cot, car seat free of charge. They are ontop of the normal luggage allowance.

It's positively hellish running in that heat and humidity. Unless you have experience of running outdoors in those sort of conditions I would think twice.

Lots of people run there, with buggies too. I found it really hard (lived there for 3 years) but people do all sorts of outdoor sports! Most jogging is done in parks on paths or along the East Coast parkway so you won't probably be off road much.

It’s really really muggy. I’m Australian and have done competitions in over 40 degrees so I’m not precious about heat but it is much harder in muggy weather. I’d stick to the gym in Singapore, I wouldn’t run outside enough for a running buggy.

@Stinkytoe what's the problem with the beaches?

Sounds like the consensus is some people will run but it's hard work. Maybe not worth taking the running buggy. We are taking a compact urban stroller with us on the plane - would we be able to take a second running buggy? I thought it would have to make up part of our baggage allowance as it's huge!

We didn't take ours, regretted it and ended up buying another one there - very expensive mistake!

Oh well I'm just looking for a bit of sand for my toddler to play on, waves to wade in, and a long path for DH walk/run on, not looking for paradise. Is it a bit boring? I was also concerned by the noise from the east coast highway.

ApricotExpat that's what I'm worried about - we've had 6 months use out of ours and it's so great for trails, though probably in excess of what we need in Singapore. My DH is a new SAHD and I just want him to get some time to himself (with toddler in the stroller) and a bit of exercise too.

Definitely take it. The beaches are fine, and there are beach clubs with pools etc and water play bits. Your DH will find plenty of paths and running tracks on the East Coast and Sentosa too.

The sentosa beaches are nice enough to play on, and there are fun beach clubs, bars etc. The worst thing is the container ships along the horizon! There's lots to enjoy.. I miss it!

Another area to look at for living is River Valley - lots to do and central for transport so easy enough for the schools further west and not too bad for getting to Changi.

I used to run in Malaysia in very similar conditions to Singapore, admittedly without a buggy but as long as you are happy to accept you will just be soaked within 30 seconds of starting and stay that way until you get out of the post run shower it’s fine. Early mornings are probably most pleasant to be honest but I used to run after work too.
I’d definitely look into sending some freight if you are going a decent length of time. Airfreight is much more expensive but quicker, shipping could be 6-8 weeks. The removals company’s will probably price per m3.

The beaches are not nice at all. Despite Singapore's reputation as being clean, they are very dirty. I did a beach clean up volunteer afternoon recently and the amount of rubbish is depressing. Also, the water is pretty disgusting thanks to the hundreds of container ships passing through every day. My son and I swam at Sentosa once, and never again.

That said, bring the buggy. Check with the airline, but you should get two baby items free with your child's ticket.

Check with your airline but most airlines will allow you to check in two pieces of baby equipment!
