I have started another thread about possible nursing in Spain.

I am starting a spanish course, they do five levels and each level takes a year.

a few questions:

is nursing easy to get into in spain
is 5 years a realistic target to be proficient in a language (enough to work)
what are the working conditions like
is all healthcare private

TIA

Hi, I live in Spain so will try and help, if I can..

  1. No idea (sorry).. I would imagine nurses are in demand all over the world though?
  2. TBH you´d probably learn it about 5 times quicker if you studied in spain i.e. moved over with basic grasp of the language, do whatever work you can while studying and immersing yourself in the language/ culture and then get a nursing job once your language is up to scratch.
  3. Um.. I think they vary from profession to profession so can´t really comment
  4. No, they have social security here too.

Sorry I couldn´t help on all counts but let me know if you have any more questions and I´ll try my best.

thank you maveta . Where abouts do you live. I have absolutely no idea where we will go (would love to be in Cuitadella, Menorca but thats probably unrealistic).

I know I would be better learning it over there, my mum has a friend who has lived in menorca now for 23 years and could only speak english, she now speaks about 5 different languages . Sadly this isnt an option for me at the moment, but will probably learn as much as I can here language wise, do a couple of years nursing and then move abroad and see what comes up.

How does housing work over there, is it the same as here? What are the schools like, do they have english speaking?

Sorry for all the questions

No worries.. I live in Mallorca, not sure what you mean re. housing, is there something specific you want to know about? I rent so don´t know much about the property market for buying. If you rent you´d be looking to sign a minimum of a year´s contract. Like UK, deposit would be one month´s rent, another month if you go through an agent as a fee, and then the first month up front. Property is relatively expensive to buy here but I can´t comment on the rest of Spain..

Schools on the whole are good, from what I know. My ds is only 7 weeks old so no real experience in that department but from what I gather they´re good. There are international schools and again, the quality depends. I guess some places will have more than others aswell. Here in Mallorca due to the large expat community there are at least 3 english schools from nursery to high school, another couple just primary school, a french school.. that´s it off the top of my head but there´s bound to be more..

HTH

Hi
I'm afraid all I know is about nurses going the other way-to the UK. I used to work in a private school teaching English in Barcelona and they ran English courses for nurses who wanted to work in the UK or Ireland. I don't know if it was because there is little work in Barcelona or it is really badly paid but I know a lot of nurses try to work elsewhere. Well that's the situation in Barcelona at least.
