ok, not a true Living overseas topic but I didn't know where else to post.
We're moving to France in August and we'de like to sell our right hand car car to buy a left hand one here in the UK (we'de like a citroen xsara picasso). We've found a few dealers but we're not happy about all the details of the transaction. Any advice as to how's best to approach this ? We're in Norfolk.

sorry - this might sound a bit idiot, but why not sell your car here and then buy the one you want in France? I'm sure they are much cheaper too.

Have you compared prices buying here to locally. tbh we found the vat difference alone was significant but same may not be true of France.

Hi
We moved from UK to France last october. We sold our Renault scenic in England and bought a Citroen Xsara here in France. We thought it was cheaper and easier

my mum is vice versa as she was living in france and bought a car over there in a auction...what a bargain she got and now she is living back at home with her french car. If she does have to sell the best option is to go to a french dealer in france and to see if they buy it off her then come home with the cash to buy a english car.

Not idiot at all Coolmama, it would obviously be the easiest, but it would make our move really much more complicated and actually more expensive to buy one in France. This move is going to be a rather complicated one.

Why not continue to drive your right hand drive car in France and address the whole problem once you are moved & settled?

hiya, we had similar issues (although we were already living here). the french second hand market is very expensive compared to the UK.

know what you mean about LHD places in the UK - a quick look on google groups saved us from nearly buying from someone who was clearly disreputable.

we have two cars out in France - one we got from ebay.co.uk - if you look for LHD cars there are quite a few. the car was pretty cheap, so we were happy to take a punt.

the other was from Belgium (which is pretty close to us), which is quite a lot cheaper than France. Most of the dealers there are set up to export to other European countries. we were lucky and got one that was already French registered so it only took one trip to the sous prefecture (the previous one had taken four trips and we were tearing our hair out by the time we finally got our carte gris)
