If your family never visit ..

Total lost opportunity in my mind but still can't help feeling a bit miffed that family go on all manner of trips abroad but don't visit us.
I feel duty bound to drag myself and kids through time zones and on long haul flights where it would be much simpler for them to come here

Same here - we would also pay for the flights! Pils have been to China once in 10 years, didn't like it and don' want to come back.

Maybe they just don’t like long haul flights? My parents have only visited me once in the last 10 years. They felt they have done England once they have done it once, and it’s not somewhere they wanted to visit again. Then a couple of years ago, mum got ill and they only do short haul now. I visit them every year. I think it’s just part of moving away from family.

But that didn’t beat PIL who didn’t visit their parents ever again after they moved to NZ!

I don’t take trips back. I don’t feel bad. We can’t afford it. I think my mum was a bit of a martyr when I was growing up and I resolved not to go down that route, so I don’t feel guilty about it either. I think I sound hard hearted, maybe I am a little bit. It’s not just the cost of going back, it’s the actual journey that I can’t face and the jet lag and I’d rather have a holiday where we’ll all enjoy it and my kids are easily pleased with trips away where we don’t travel very far at all.

Maybe they just don’t like long haul flights?
They manage just fine when it's to a destination they have chosen.
I don't think we live in an exotic enough place.
Like you ShanghaiDiva I've offered to pay for flights.
There is no work or medical problems getting in the way.
