emigrating to oz - can we take picnic basket?

A container load of our furniture has already gone. My Mum wants to give me her picnic basket. We are sending another 3 boxes of bits and bobs via sea. The picnic basket is fab (all little compartments etc). Would love to have it over there for sentimental vale aswell. It is a wicker type basket and I think they might burn it. Does anyone know how likely it is that they wont open the box and it could sneak through?

we just moved to nz and declared our picnic basket - customs opened the box to check it (along with other stuff) but didn't burn it. don't know if Oz is stricter?

Just been advised by shipper not to take wicker so done know what to do

You could try and contact customs and get their advise. I don't have a number sorry.

it will certainly be fumagated and probably not allowed in if they suspect it's been on a picnic, ie in contact with the filthy dirty English countryside and its attendant plagues.

Best declare it and be prepared for the worst

no experience sorry and hijacking this thread a little, we are planning to emigrate, just waiting for our visa, but I did wonder how much for a container to oz, thanks

Of course you can!! If you are at all concerned then just declare it at customs and they will check that it's not riddled with some exotic bug (if it is they will spray it) and then send you on your way.
Just don't fill it with food!

I've brought in wooden pieces from deepest darkest south east asia and all sorts of wierd and wonderful things and they just check they are not carrying pests.

SweetyDarling · 30/04/2007 10:11

I'm pretty sure they don't produce wicker in Aus, so it's got to be coming from somewhere!

Our dd has a wikcer chair which we brought before coming to Oz.

We were advised not to bring it by various people, but the shipping company packed it, labled it & it got through....no problems.

The opened & the box & quarentened it for a week. They also quarenteened outdoor shoes & dd old travel system.

sandcastles · 30/04/2007 10:26

jenkel, we paid almost 3k in June 06. That included some packing in the UK, and delievery/unpacking here.

Our also took away the old boxes & wrapping for us.

Take it in your luggage if you're worried - at least that way you can personally speak to the customs officer who will inspect it.

MrsJohnCusack · 30/04/2007 11:51

yes I think they fumigated all our stuff - you have to declare all wicker plus things like shells, any other animal products. None of our or our parents stuff got destroyed. we were very careful not to bring in any garden stuff.

I did state that our picnic basket had never actually been on a picnic - maybe that helped!
