North American Supermarkets are horrific

We've been complaining about the supermarkets around here (Canada) for months. I'm sick of buying sandwich meat and produce and it being rotten two days later. I was looking carrots last night but couldn't bring myself to buying them. I was able to bend them a full 180 degrees.

so anyway, we were watching old reruns of "Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" last night on BBC Canada. There was a scene of the in Tescos and we were drooling at the mouth.

I mean, Tesco's is considered crap in the UK but its superior to these pits.

the selection of meat, cheese, real dairy products, organic, alcohol....

We do have a Whole Foods Market not too far away but I find ordinary supermarkets so expensive here that I resent going to somewhere nicknames "Whole Paycheck Market"! I suspect if I ever go there I will be hooked though.

Ous ordinary supermarkets are A & P, Pathmark, Food Emporium and Stop & Shop. None are great and none have everything I want.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 18/04/2007 17:05

We have a Trader Joes too but it is tiny and I didn't think it was very impressive. Not even any decent sausages!

WendyWeber · 18/04/2007 17:10

Can you get whole milk, Cf?

In NY we had A&P and Key and also the Gristedes mentioned in the Gourmet-Milk-From-Amazon page - and something else but I forget what.

In Minnesota we had Byerly's which was carpeted and had chandeliers hanging over the freezer cabinets

nailpolish · 18/04/2007 17:10

Icod - a corn dog is one of the most disgusting things known to man.
It's a cheap sausage on a stick that has been dipped in sweet corn batter then deep fried. We tried one last year at the State fair, I nearly threw up.

It took me nearly a year to find a bread that I can stomach, we now get Brownberry Double fiber whole wheat.

We get our milk from a local dairy and they guarantee that the milk comes from cows that are not treated with rBST.

I used to dream about Tesco's, but on our last trip back I went to one on Christmas eve and lost count how many times I was shoulder barged, and as for the veg, there was no bloody veg left at 10:00 in the morning!
I am cured.
