I have the possibility of a job opportunity in Bordeaux. I am a bit of a francophile and speak quite good French (although my job will be mostly in English) so I'm quite interested in the idea. My DH would have to leave his job, his French is good but not good enough to work in French - he would be a SAHD for a bit to our DC who are 4 (not long off 5) and 2. He's really up for it (he hates UK weather and was a roaming expat as a child so loves adventures - we're not that long back from Asia for his job).
Things I am nervous about - DC1 schooling - is it easy to get into a local school/maternelle? Would she learn very quickly to speak French? I fear a period of unhappiness for her.
Where are nice suburbs to live in? Are there any cheaper areas where we could have a small house with a garden?
My salary is going to be pretty average - how expensive is life here? DH will probably pick up work but it'll be something fairly unskilled initially I would have thought.
My DD is just starting reception in the UK and got into a good school - if we had to come back she would be unlikely to get into the same school and the alternatives are less good. Am I completely mad to consider this now she's school age? I feel it would be a great opportunity for change, better weather and the opportunity for DC to become fluent in another language but I have some reservations.
