American Newspaper for kids to read

DD is 5 and just as my parents did, I want to have a news publication that I can read with my kids so they start to learn about the world, not just America. I've looked at The NY Times and I'm not impressed the WSJ bores me with their editorial and US Today is too US centric. Anyone got any ideas? The economist seems to be the best option or possibly the economist.

We are Brits living in the USA and subscribe to The Week for us and The Week Junior for the kids. It's British, paper version that arrives by mail and gives a fairly good balance of world news.

Where in the US are you? I'm American living in the UK. I liked the Washington Post when I lived there. Unfortunately there aren't many great options, most regional print papers aren't very good.

If you're not a fan of the NYT or WSJ then you're pretty much out of luck, any other local paper is going to be pretty poor (Newsday if that still exists, Philadelphia Inquirer, NJ local papers, etc.)

I did like the Wash Post, might be worth checking out. Slightly less liberal biased than NYT and good political coverage due to its location.

We were just in Disney for Xmas and the Muppets have a new show there about "Great Moments in History, but just the American parts!" As I'm sure you have found that applies to just about everything in the US!

han that is exactly my issue. I find the style of writing in the WSJ to be very challenging. I've never liked the way write, referencing information that isn't relevant, or just poor structure. The NYT has annoyed me over the last election.

I will check the Washington post. I was also thinking of the FT. It's a bit too business centric for me but at least you get a world view.

For history I'm planning to do a couple of trips when we are home with the kids. DD is 5 and surprised me when she got a lot out of a visit to Stratford upon Avon. I've got a trip planned to a Cherokee reservation in may so they learn something about native Americans.

We get The Week Jr too. The dcs love it.

There are some really great places for American history visits. Plimouth Plantation in MA does colonial life well, as does Williamsburg in VA. Gettysburg in PA for Civil War. There are a number of local places in the NY/NJ area that have info on local Native American tribes. It's not all jingoistic crap, though there's a lot of that out there too.

han tell me about it. We have been to a couple of local places here in NJ/NY as we live in North Jersey. Some of these places are awful plus they are very expensive.

Oh and we have a trip to Williamsburg planned for November when schools are out for the teachers convention.

I grew up on Long Island in NY, places there may be expensive too, no idea! Old Bethpage was a site recreating the experience of the time, and Garvies Point is more of a museum. Montauk and Quogue all the way at the end of the island may also have sites.

In the Philadelphia area the Penn Treaty museum has info about William Penn's interactions with native tribes, better than many as he was a Quaker.

Philly also has tons of colonial things, of course. I lived there for 20 years so if you want more info let me know.

I end up avoiding LI because of the traffic. It takes a good 3 hours to drive out to montauk. Silly I know but there is enough south of me and in manhattan for now.

I'm personally a huge fan of the Cape Cod Times but unless your children are as interested as I am in what's getting washed up along the Cape Cod National Seashore or what the Kennedys are up to, it might be a bit niche

The Boston Globe is quite good, IMO.
