Anyone live near or in Boston, Massachusetts?

There is a possibility my DP might be asked to relocate there and whilst initially I thought I wouldn't want to live in America, he said to me last night that Boston was quite close in mentality to the UK.

I have two small children (6 months and 3 years) and am currently a SAHM. I've had a look online and it does seem like a lovely place to live. It seems to be pretty expensive by comparison to the USA in general but I don't think we would necessarily be living in Boston itself, the company is outside of Boston but it is the nearest city.

Anyhow I just thought I'd get a few opinions just incase an offer comes our way.

it is closer than other bits of the UK, and there is a big international community, especially around the universities. but it is still a different country, and despite the common language there are surprising little differences.

But go for it, especially if it is a few years rather than forever. it is a fun place to be and a great experience.

Are you two married? This may be problematic.
I have lived in Boston for a year with a six year old. You may find it very isolating if you don't work.

No we're not married. Engaged, and could easily get married quickly if we wanted to as we're not interested in having a big day, we just haven't done anything about it as we've been busy trying to do up the house and have babies. I assume the problem would be with me getting a VISA as I wouldn't officially be family?

If you want to work then you need to make sure your DH requests a spouse working visa for you too. That might be easier if you are actually married.

One of DH's friends moved to the US and a stipulation of her contract was that her DH had a working visa. Oh, and get good health insurance included in the offer!!!!

In regards to Boston - DO IT!!! It's an absolutely beautiful city, very accessible, very child friendly, very progressive and European in outlook. We've spent time there for weekends etc and also with DH's friends. Love it, lots of old buildings, great food, quirky districts, park and the climate isnt extremely cold or hot.

Hi - I've lived here for just over 12 years. It's a great city, very family friendly.
Weather wise, 4 definite seasons, which I've learned to love.
Tons of things for kids to do, summers are hot and we spend a lot of time at the beach / lake. There's a Lego land, fantastic children's museum and aquarium etc.

Would you live in Boston itself, or one of the suburbs? Plenty of really great towns / suburbs outside of town which are great for kids. Traffic can be hellish though so definitely bear that in mind in terms of commutes etc. house prices, taxes, schools etc can vary widely depending on the town.
Doesn't sound like school systems will be a factor for you, but maybe if you're staying more than a few years?

I echo what others have said about a visa. Even if you're not planning on working, immigration issues can be a real headache.

It does feel a lot more British than other parts of the U.S. There's a thriving British expat scene here and several (overpriced) British shops where you can stock up on any treats you might be missing!
