Moving to New York with young kids

We are moving to New York for husband's work in Midtown and would appreciate advise on areas within or outside manhattan. Looking for a place with good public school for pre k and kindergarten. And a nice community for families with small children.

For midtown you have the options in New Jersey of Hoboken & Jersey City if you want a pre-k program. Hoboken public schools are not great but are improving. Weehawken is a blue ribbon school district and they have a prek 4 program. All three towns are an easy commute to midtown.

If you want more space you have the option to do the burbs. In New Jersey you have South Orange, Maplewood, Millburn/Short Hills, Summit, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Tenafly. In CT, you have Greenwich, Old Greenwich, Riverside, Cos Cob and Stamford. In Westchester, NY you have scarsdale, Rye, White Plains and Harrison.

Look at greatschools.org for rankings but also consider your lifestyle. Burbs requires you to drive a lot while city living allows you to walk and meet more people during your day.
