Car Insurance to cover Belgium and Uk

hiya all,

Wonderin if any1 can give me the name of a car insurer that will cover me in both Belgium and UK. I own a UK registered family car, 05 plate so nothing flash or new, will live and work in Belgium, but drive back to UK to see the family for the duration of the skool holidays (Xmas, Easter, Summer).

Should I get Belgian or UK insurance?

Will I need to register my car in Belgium and change the number plates, get a Controle Technique etc?

If I do this and get Belgian insurance, how long will that allow me to be covered for when I go to UK during the holidays?

Alternatively, can I get UK insurance that covers me for Belgium, and therefore not have to go through the re-Registration process?

I know that UK insurance generally covers you with a Green Card in Europe, but I believe this is only for a total of 30 days in 1 calendar year. I will be in Belgium for the majority of the year, travelling to UK with the car and using it in the UK only for the holiday periods.

Thanx so much.

If the car is in Belgium, you should comply with Belgian law I'm afraid and replate. If you get caught driving that car in Belgium, they'll look you up on the national database, check the date of arrival in Belgium and fine you accordingly.

There is no way around this, if you are registered as living in Belgium, even if you are also legally resident in another country, you must replate a car as a Belgian car.

Before doing this, check your liability for importation tax, mainly based on engine size / power .

I wouldn't for a second go to the bother of replating a right hand drive car. Apart from the hassle of trying to deal with that sort of administration (think how many mornings you could waste chasing paper at the DIV) the insurance would no doubt be even more criminally expensive than standard Belgian insurance (which is astronomically expensive in itself). Then if you wanted to sell the perishing thing or go back to the UK you would have to re-import it. Many a large glass of vino would be needed to fortify against all of that.

Hi, I'm insured with Nationwide, comprehensive cover that lets you keep the car in W Europe for max 180 days in an insurance year, as long as it is registered to a UK address

Hi, I am with Asda and they will cover 365 days in Europe.

Thats really useful thank you. After reading their blurb, Asda do a very good deal on european cover and as you say whereas others stipulate a 30day or 90 day period asda are keen to stress that they do the whole year, and they don't need pre-notification that you are going. Smile

But its not for me because their policy faqs state that its for SDP only Angry, and they are keen to stress that its for travel only. So I guess to get you there and then for a bit of touristy action only. I need one that will cover my travel each day to and from work.
