Dp, myself and our 3 small children are moving to oz next year, but we are finding ourselves torn between Perth and Brisbane! We are british born and bred, and lots of people said we would be more suited to Perth as Brisbane is a very humid heat and us brits cant cope with it, dont really know a hell of alot about either places yet - any input would be brill!!!

OMG mymamma . That is shocking!

I've read this thread with interest as I know nothing about Brisbane but I have to say it sounds a fab place to live. You may have read (in another post) that I'm in the process of applying to emigrate to Perth but these descriptions make me want to go there instead . I am aware of the remoteness of Perth but we won't be going to any other city as DH's parents live in Perth and we want to be near them.

DebiS - if you don't mind me asking, where abouts do you live? I only know South Perth and we certainly can't afford to live there!

Love all this positive talk about Brisbane, we should be there in 11wks time Definitely had a 'country town' feel and mentality when I was growing up there, but in the last 11yrs that I've been away, I've definitely noticed the cosmolitan thing developing.

mymama · 12/08/2006 11:50

The negative thing that does need to be mentioned about Brisbane is the water crisis at the moment. We are on severe water restrictions with all outdoor watering by bucket (no hoses at all). In two months it will go to next level - no outdoor watering at all. We really really need it to rain.

scully · 12/08/2006 12:28

I've been reading about that on The Courier Mail website. Certainly not to the same degree but at least we will be used to the hosepipe ban we have here, when we move out there. Will make us think twice about buying a house with a pool next year when we start looking
My sister was saying NSW is over 90% drought affected as well and the last big rain fall they had, it didn't rain in the right areas

OMG my dh and dd are applying for emigration next year and have the same problem. Been to Brisbane twice and loved QLD, spent time in Perth and it struck me as very spread out with no community, had to drive everywhere, but we know loads of people there. We plan to spend 3 months in each city before deciding. What is the ex-pat community like?

israel · 18/08/2006 23:55

We are in Perth and love the city.
We live as far north as you can get...literaly the end of the road.
The climate is fantastic...very mediteranean.
We are only 3 mins from the beach and 15 from the bush...where there are wild kangaroos...parrots...etc
Our lifesyle has changed completely...lots of outdoors stuff...and the kids have just blossomed.
From a rundown milltown...a 1930s house...to a modern 4 bed 2 bath...double garage...and a recently installed pool....just wonderful.
Just one downside...I miss my family and friends like hell.
...and I have never been to bris...so cant compare.

giggly sorry to reply late. I am in the north of Brisbane and off hand I can count 10 uk families who have moved here in last 2-3 years. They adore it and do socialise together quite a bit. I have made a couple of lovely friends. They do feel like it is a bit "country" though. One commented that our supermarkets are like corner stores to them. I guess it depends what you want.

SydSnow · 23/08/2006 13:55

Knowing what made you narrow your choice down to Brisbane or Perth might make it easier to advise you.
What are your criteria?
What was it about Sydney/Melbourne/Adelaide etc that made you rule them out?

eidsvold · 23/08/2006 22:25

mymama - I am on the northside of Brisbane too??

I live in the pine rivers area - where abouts are you??

Did you see our meet up in Brisbane thread in this topic??

mymama · 24/08/2006 02:04

eidsvold - I did see the meetup thread thank you. Haven't posted on it as yet but would be interested in joining in.

I am not far from you. I am just over the border of Pine Rivers (Narangba area). I was reading your thread re your pregnancy (congratulations) and figured you were close when you mentioned Caboolture or Redcliffe Hospital.

eidsvold · 24/08/2006 03:12

Oh Narangba - just up the road - how weird!!!! ( in a nice way)

giggly · 26/08/2006 22:57

SYDSNOW
We have friends in both Brisbane and Perth, we found Sydney like London, big and noisey, and Melbourne was nice but did not get any sense that we would want to live there, everywhere else comes way down the list. Perth is off the market to now as we feel that we would be to isolated, at least in QLD you are closer to other cities for visits. Can anyone recomend somewhere to stay with dh and dd in Brissie area, that will be our base for about 3 months that will not break the bank. cheers Forgot to say QLD goverment are going to sponser us as we are nurses.
