Hi everybody,

We have been told that there are space for our son at 2nd maternelle at these three schools, and I just wanted to ask if anyone in this forum knows anyone with kids in them or has heard something about them?

Just out of interest, what's wrong with Les Marroniers? A friend has her daughter signed up there for September 2014 entry and said that it was nice...

I still think you need Stockel. Cinema, cafes, restaurants, sports centre, shops, good tram and metro links. Big market on Place Dumon on a Saturday morning.

A few too many parents have visited Les Maronniers in Auderghem and had a mum whose child went to the nearest creche, none of them liked the place, hearsay only (yes I always say don't listen to hearsay). Les Maronniers in Etterbeek, well lots of positive about that school. Even on a comparison of the socio-economic index of the nearest schools :
Les Maronniers Auderghem 10
St Julien 13
Paradis des Enfants 15
Chant d'Oiseau 18
Notre Dame des Graces 20

and having said that, I'd probably choose Les Maronniers over Sans Souci-Petits Moineaux and Sainte Trinité, Jardins d'Elise V les Maronniers I'd have a harder time choosing. You simply have the opportunity to choose your area and school in advance, it's hard to beat the area along metro line 1 (and other areas which however you'd not want such as along tram line 44 as they'd be too residential). Les Maronniers is however probably a good choice if your child is off to European School 3 which is almost next door and if you already live in that area of Auderghem between Pétillon and Hankar. I bet European School 3 does make a large difference to waiting lists at les Maronniers in maternelle, as it is so close, but I'm guessing here, the primaire is probably not so popular, I bet ambitious locals would look instead towards Chant d'Oiseau or Paradis des Enfants in that area. For les Maronniers, I think LongtimeinBrussels is a better person to ask as its her nearest communal maternelle/primaire.

I visited Les Maronniers Auderghem earlier in the year, in addition to several others on your list as we have our second son coming up Belgian school age and have been considering possible local schools. Totally personal, but I was off put by lots of the parents and it had a down at heel sort of feel. There was some pretty bad behaviour going unchecked as well. Couldn't get out fast enough. That said I thought the teachers there were making a bigger effort than in other places we saw. Still the ambiance in other schools was way nicer.

Come back Rushingrachel, your comments might help Desperately!

Not sure about that! Its so subjective ... but visiting the schools helped A LOT. Significant differences in the feel of the various places. I liked Institut Ste Anne a lot. I also liked both the Chant d'Oiseau schools.

I sympathise with OP because I really like Ixelles too (although not the side of Ixelles where her schools are ...that area is a dump). In fact, just this pm, I was sitting in a friend's garden in Ixelles thinking how nice it was. Just between Avenue Louise and the Etangs, nowhere nicer really, just along from Flagey ... it IS very cosmopolitan and DOES have a different feel to out here in suburban Auderghem!

BUT if you are looking for the total package: house; parking; dog (that's going to be one of the biggest challenges); good school; extra curricular activities ... its a tough one.

IMHO to get that package in Ixelles you simply need A LOT OF MONEY in addition to willingness to drive around to get your kids from a to b as the public transport isn't great. Private school (unless you've got your schooling sorted way ahead of time), parking, LOADS of disposable income for a decent rental.

Thus I could never live in Ixelles. Schooling is simply something I personally wouldn't compromise on even for a second and we don't have a lot of money!

marchmad · 06/06/2013 22:17

A dog too? Well that rules out 90% of rentals immediately, especially in Ixelles. Thanks Rachel, she really has summed up the reasons why Ixelles, unless you can afford 4000 euro a month for a decent 4+ bed accepting a dog (I am not underestimating there) and the time spent trying to park your car and accepting everything takes twice as long there to get to, then it's better to look elsewhere. The area Rushingrachel is talking about in Ixelles which is nice is further away from work, the area where 2 of the schools on your list are is not nice at all, the other one is in a bit of a nicer area, but not as nice as west of Ixelles or in the other areas mentioned.

rushingrachel · 07/06/2013 07:51

There was someone who had a dog who really wanted Ixelles. Praps it wasn't OP ...

I agree marchmad you need upwards of 4k for a house. The friend I refer to has a duplex with the garden ... 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and the kitchen is pretty much a work surface in the sitting room. 3400 PCM.

Where do you get the socio-economics indexes from? I am intrigued to know what dd's school is.

marchmad · 07/06/2013 09:18

I sent you them porto.

Hello, I try to find "ecole maternelle" for my daughter in Auderghem. Could you send me these socio-economics indexes too? I did´not find them on web. Thank you very much.
