Help! How to get into a public school in Brussels

Hi all,

I sense from this site that it is extremely difficult to get into a (good) public school in Brussels. We wil be moving there in September with our 4 1/2 year old (born Jan 2009) and are hoping to live either in Saint Gilles, Ixelles, Etterbeek or around the EU quarter zip code 1000). We do not wish to have a long commute to work (EU quarter) or to school for that matter. However, it seems like we should have signed up our son when he was born...basically. Sigh. If anyone can share some advice on schools (good, decent) in those areas and how to get in, either in September or as soon as possible I would be so thankful!

If you live in Kraainem, it does indeed matter, as you can also look at :

Diabolo
St Georges
Notre Dame de la Trinité
la Fermette

If you lived in Brussels region or other parts of Flanders, you would not be allowed to enrol in the above 4 schools. Add them to your list.

These 4 schools have 1 disadvantage, it's probably not too relevant now as it's for those children 10 years old applying for secondaire, those children at the 4 schools in 6e primaire are disadvantaged when applying for secondaire if they are the first born child in a family and have no priority for a secondaire. I wouldn't think about it too much for a 2 year old.

You'll find these 4 schools on this map.

whichever one is nearest or has a place? Have you checked especially there is a place for a 4 year old at SC de Stockel as all their classes have 27 in them at that age unless someone has just left?
