Amsterdam primary schools

Does anyone know how the admissions process works? Is it postcode-related, for example?

I'm thinking of state schools, not private/international schools.

I'm also thinking of 'specialist schools', such as Montessori.

Any advice welcome!

Not sure how you got on but I can recommend a fabulous Montessori playgroup/preschool just south of Vondelpark. Jacaranda Tree is run by an expat Aussie, given the age of your child. My son started in the crawling baby group and we loved it. (We are no longer in Amsterdam)

hello, i am new to this thread and hoping to find some help :) we are american, english and spanish speakers moving to amsterdam and have boy/girl twins who just turned 10.

they do not speak any dutch but am open to looking at public schools so they can learn the language. is this a good idea? we are moving in late december and also contemplating the AICS (the intl and british schools are too expensive). any opinions about AICS? we will be in amsterdam 1-2 years. we do not yet have housing but are looking to live in the zuid-sud area. i've heard there are now public primary schools that teach in both english and dutch. is this accurate?

also, my son is an avid futbol player and looking for a competitive league for his age. can anyone help with this as well?

thank you!

The Amsterdam International School is truly terrible. Mismanagement, miscommunication, misinformation, bullying, lies and deception, sick building, racism, bad quality hiding behind being a new school, but it is now 2015.

Hello there, I was looking at this thread because we are thinking to relocate to Amsterdam in the near future, I've applied to do a Masters at the university. If anyone would be kind enough to do so, I'd like to hear some honest views of what life for an ex-pat is like there? What should we be aware of? Our little one will be three when we move. Cheers

Whatever you do, please don't send your kids to the Amsterdam International Community School (AICS). They are very unprofessional, there is very little communication and the quality of the teaching is poor.
