Are there any quantity surveyors who moved overseas here?

I'm a Quantity Surveyor, who is currently a SAHM and I want to get back into the field here in canada, I wondered if anyone else was in the same position, or is a QS working overseas, or a construction professional?

Yes, me! Never been asked that on MN before Grin. I've been in Africa for over 8 years & not able to work here at all. Which I'm fine with coz have 3 young DCs. And no-one uses the NEC here which is the only contract I ever worked on in UK (started in gas pipelines then railways). But, I'm not chartered & understand it would have been a different story if I was.
What about you? What's the situation in Canada? Are you planning to return to the UK?
We are but I don't know if I'll be able or want to go back to QS'ing after such a long period out of the game.

Hi I've been here for four years now, I'm ICIOB, but didn't get round to being MCIOB :(

I think we are staying in canada for a bit, I'm not sure if we will ever return to the UK.

I am mainly used to PFI contracts, there is plenty of work up north for oil and gas, but that would mean working away.

How come you moved to Africa?

We moved here as DH had a job offer and offer of relocation.

So you never tried to negotiate the minefield that is the RICS? I gave up in despair.
We moved first to Zambia, now in Botswana - like you, with DH's job. He does consultancy for African governments, in healthcare. Right now we are due to go back in Sept 2014 but might stay away another 3-4 years if the posting was right.
When I left London in 2004 there was far more work than there were QS's, suspect it's far from like that now. I'm not sure how compatible it will be with me having been away for say 10 years, having 3 young kids (DD only 3 months), & whether I'd even want to do it anymore. Not sure how well I would tolerate all the bollocks, IYKWIM. Or maybe that would be a bonus Grin & I'd get more work done as a result.
