Singapore school run

Very likely we are moving to Singapore in Aug of this year. I've been trawling the forums and found all the info hugely helpful. My boy, aged 7 and at a small London prep, is used to the heat and food as his Dad is half Malaysian so we've been to that side of the world a few times; he loves it. He is, however, used to a small and intimate school.
I like the sound of Dover Court and OFS for their intimate make-up, though the latter seems to have had some dodgy write-ups. We'll also put him down for Tanglin although the size will be something for him to get used to; probably by the time a space comes up he'll be doing his A Levels.
Having visited S'pore at Christmas and stayed in town as you do when on hols, I have this romantic notion of having a condo somewhere similar. My question is, if we got into DC - my preferred choice, I think - or even Tanglin if we were so lucky, can I still live somewhere central and do the school run by cab or MRT? I don't drive and I'm not sure about the school bus system, although I think after a few months he'd be OK about doing it.
Or is it better to live near the schools and so have your new parent friends around you? And if you do live near Dover Court or Tanglin what do most people do for accomm and do you all drive? And taxi swaps going on? Where do you all live and is it easy to get to town? I like the condo idea but find the property websites hard to navigate.
Any ideas / thoughts appreciated.
Oh, and if anyone has left beloved pets behind, where did you relocate them and how did that go?
LOTS of questions, sorry...

PS have you posted a question on the Singapore Expats forum? A stern crowd sometimes but v helpful. I'm down there as Makingthemove, so do a search on that name and lots of Dover Court-based threads will pop up (or just search for the school).

Good luck.

Thanks for your message londonmoo. I think you'll like DC its very old fashioned but it felt 'right' and wasnt a place where you'd worry about your child getting lost in the crowd unlike the other schools we saw, also all the teachers we came across (we popped in during lessons) seemed very enthusiastic and really engaged the children.thank you about the tip regarding the Sing.expat forum will check that too. Hope to see you out there sometime, best of luck with the move ! X

Sounds just lovely! Good luck with your move too - when are you leaving or have you already left? Found accommodation yet? DH has just announced he may have to go out much earlier eek - we've SO much to do, not to mention Olympic tix which might not now be used :(

Never mind, it'll all be worth it :)

Hope bump's behaving.

Just wanted to let you know that Dulwich College is opening in Singapore soon. My dcs are currently at a Dulwich College in China and the headmaster is leaving in August to open in Singapore, although I don't think it is opening until January 2013 and have no idea where it'll be situated - sorry! Have a look at the website - they are a very experienced group of schools.

From my own personal experience, he is an incredible headmaster and runs a brilliant school. My dcs have simply flourished at the school and we joined in its first year. My dd in particular was trailing behind in Year 2 when she left the UK and is now a confident, articulate, kind young lady who is ahead in most subjects, nearing the end of Year 6.

The headmaster has young dcs, which helps, as he wants the best for his dcs! Plus, his wife his lovely too.

Good luck with the move - Singapore is fabulous, I'm quite jealous

@ Londonmoo: We've not moved yet. DH going to move end of April , I'm here with the kids until baby comes and we get passport etc sorted ...... will be fun with 3 kids :) Accommodation wise we had a look at a few places during our visit in March .We're probably going to go for an older condo complex as they tend to be more spacious for the same price as the newer smaller condo's. We looked mainly in the Dover area and surrounds. Sorry about olympic tickets. Bump's behaving really well so far x

Dragon, the DC info is very interesting, thanks for that. For us, being on what we know will be a short-term contract, the school that we start at will most likely be the one we stick with, since our timescales are quite short. But really good to hear of another option coming in.

ZHmum, I'm with you on the older condo thing, we had the same idea. In the end we will wait til we see places in the flesh but in theory the more spacious the better, and if they look a bit fuddy I think that's OK with us. Draw the line at avocado bathroom suites and shell sinks, otherwise really not bothered.

Glad to hear Bump behaving!

SingTel tower is nothing nasty, we live near it and it looks like offices or similar!

ZHmum · 08/05/2012 10:49

Thanks Mummyinggnome, is this the Singtel tower on 1000 Dover Road? If so thats great news.
Londonmoo have you got a moving date yet? DH is there now and we're hoping to get there by the end of July all going well with baby (4weeks to go :) )
Accommodation wise, we're considedring the Clementi condo's , theyre older but more spacious, DH will have a look and report back soon.

londonmoo · 08/05/2012 12:02

Hi ZHmum, glad to hear all is well. Is DH coming back in time for hatching? Hope so.
My DH went out two days ago, started new job but still has to come back and finish old one. This will be done during June, after which he goes out to Sing again, before finally coming back one more time to pick us up. All a bit mental.
We'll go out right after our Olympic booking, so mid-Aug, not got a date yet. DH is looking, this week, at properties. He has no less than six agents' details and a big batch of places that I've earmarked, from Clementi and Mount Sinai down to Holland Drive, Farrer Rd junction, One North, Buona Vista, Dover - he'll be busy :)
He knows what we would all like (I hope) and once we've got a few places to consider we'll get in touch with the school bus people again and ask about transfer times to school, and that will go into the mix, and then we'll choose.
I also like the idea of older-but-spacious.
Currently doing up flat to rent out and throwing away enormo amounts of stuff on eBay, Freecycle, charity shops, wherever. Exciting (and oddly cleansing)!
I just really want to get out there now - really, really a lot. (tic toc).
