Do any overseas MNers have a Kindle?

just that really. I'd really like a Kindle but I'm not sure if they work overseas. Everything on Amazon seems to suggest that you have to be UK based but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of having one and living overseas.
We're Based in Europe atm but certainly won't be forever.
Thanks.

I have one, live in Italy but have UK address and bank account still so had it sent and registered there. Works fine and I love it!

laughorcry · 08/05/2011 08:14

Ditto BananaGio - also in Europe, but bought the kindle in the UK and have it registered to UK email address. I can buy on the Amazon uk website and books appear by wifi here. It is wonderful!

frakyouveryverymuch · 08/05/2011 08:18

Ditto. Sent to parents in the UK, registered to UK account - not geographically anywhere near Europe and it works fine. I love it Grin

Oh fabulous :) Thank you so much.

I was trying to look at kindle books on Amazon and it kept telling me that they were only available for UK customers. I'm pretty sure my address on there is a UK one but I'll check and make sure it is.

Woohoo! Kindle here I come :)

I live in Belgium and buy kindle books from the UK amazon store.

Hi I'm in Singapore and have the Kindle app on my iPad. You can purchase Kindle products outside of the UK but you must register your Kindle product it in the UK (or US, or other approved location) before you can do so.

Singapore is not approved, so I cheated by using my UK VPN on the iPad. With the VPN, Amazon thought I was in the UK so I was able to register the Kindle product. Only then could I purchase Kindle items from the UK Amazon shop. Before that I was unable to make any Kindle purchase - even using my UK account with UK address & UK credit card. I would get the same message as you got and when I looked into it further it basically told me to wait until I returned to the UK to register and purchase.

Not sure if this helps....

Hmm that's weird, I live in South Africa, bought my kindle when on holiday in the UK visiting parents, since coming home I use my South African credit card and no problems. There is no Amazon here but lots of people have Kindles so don't think you'll have an issue, the books still arrive within seconds via wifi. I love it as a perpack here costs 10 to 20 ponds as we pay tax and import duty on books so I save a fortune

GoingToBeSize12 · 08/05/2011 14:58

I'm in Central America and also have one linked to my UK Amazon account and credit card. I LOVE it. We only have one shop here that sells books in English and they have a v limited selection, so now i have a Kindle I am never stuck for something to read.

dilbertina · 09/05/2011 11:57

Or you could get a Sony ereader so you can use multiple formats. You can download books for free then if you're naughty. Which I'm not, obviously. In any case it does mean you're not tied to amazon.

scaryteacher · 09/05/2011 11:59

Dh had one at Christmas from Amazon UK, and like Porto, we are near Brussels.

Kiwinyc · 09/05/2011 17:22

Friend of mine has one in NZ and has no probs using it there.

I have a G3 Kindle and they tell me off if I am trying to buy book in the wrong zone, even with a UK address and a UK bank account.
Amazon help told me that you are supposed to shop at amazon.com which is not as good as .co.uk.
But then I still received the books they warn me of (freebees for the moment) but the fact that I would have to pay in dollars is stopping me to buy anything yet.
I am in europe but DH bought the kindle here not in the UK.

their reply:
"I understand that you want to purchase Kindle books from Amazon.co.uk.

Please be informed that, Kindle content is available on Amazon.co.uk to UK residents only. In other words, the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store is only available to customers physically located in the United Kingdom with a valid UK invoice address and payment method.

Since you are currently living in EUrope, you can purchase Kindle books only from Amazon.com. I am sorry for any inconvenience or misunderstanding this may have caused you.

However, if you move to UK, you can update your address as UK address at 'Manage Your Kindle' page, so that you will be able to purchase Kindle contents from Amazon.co.uk.

dh has a 3g Kindle and he tells me that when you register the Kindle it recognises you are in Europe and sends you to Amazon.com. He says you then change it on the Kindle website to Amazon.co.uk, and from the money going out of the UK account, it works!

Portofino · 09/05/2011 20:38

I have a Belgian email address and Belgian mastercard. It still works fine from Amazon.co.uk.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 11/05/2011 10:20

Portofino scaryT do you order from your kindle or your computer?
Does it make any difference anyway?

scaryteacher · 11/05/2011 10:34

Both.

Portofino · 11/05/2011 14:01

I order via the PC.

timetomoveon · 13/05/2011 20:13

Congratulations on your Kindle, I have one in Europe and it works fine. You can buy disks of books from Ebay for your Kindle or pop over to the Mumsnet Kindle club we're happy to share what we have over there.

I love my Kindle, it's the best thing DH has EVER bought me.
