MNers in the US, how big is a block?

Hopefully not like a piece of string...

It's for a translation; if you walk half a block, how far is that? I've found somewhere that a block is 150m, which seems about right, but I'd like your input if possible.

In Chicago in residential areas they are usually 330 ft by 660ft. New York 264ft by 1056 ft apparently.

That's quite a big difference, then. Text is set in San Francisco, I should have mentioned. Didn't realise there were regional variations.
