Ok, I'm so over Winter now (Oz)

Anyone else? It's pissed down here for the past two days (Sydney). I feel really sorry for the kids at school because the whole place is designed for them to be outside most of the time, my bedroom smells damp (despite the mega expensive new roof to stop the leaks) and I had to get more firewood delivered yesterday to stop from freezing because I've acclimatised so much that 17 degrees feels artic. Woke up to sunshine this morning but the clouds are gathering now - I've been conned

Sorry but I am loving it! Doing things outside without getting grim & sweaty is bliss. Even made mulled wine & mulled cider the other evening - it was yum but the atmosphere wasn't quite right. It's impossible to get that coming-in-the-from-the-cold cosy feeling here tho as the houses are freezing. I was mortified at having to get some of those ugly bootstyle slippers cos the tiled floor is so cold. But I do like going out with DS & actually playing properly with him outside without just slumping in the shade like I do in summer!

Hmmm I'm somewhere inbetween.

Hurrah and YES to an invigorating wintry walk on the beach this morning.

But BOO HISS to having to pay a FORTUNE for firewood to keep the chill off our freezing, poorly insulated house. I sooo miss central heating. But another hurrah for scrummy casseroles and soups etc.

At least you know that on 1st September the sun will be out and the days will be warmer and Spring will have arrived, unlike in the UK when they have 5 mins of spring on June 15th then it's a fortnight of summer before being shit again

I love winter - red wine and slow cooked lamb shanks and pea and ham soup and drifting to sleep to the sound of lashing rain... But like Claudia, it costs me a fortune in firewood, since the wood fire's almost the sole source of heating in our house and there's someone home all day now. I'm just lucky that my 20-mo-old is good about staying away from it.

Tbh, like everyone else I think if I had a properly insulated house and central heating I would be fine. I can cook Winter food with my eyes closed and indulge in my favourite Sunday roasts without looking totally stupid. It has made me realise though that I am so glad I never had a dog in the UK. I am not particularly house proud but two consecutive days of a wet, muddy very springy springer spaniel have done my head in!

Your description of an English Summer made me laugh Claudia - it's so true! The Summer before we left for Oz DH vividly remembers using the barbie twice in June, then never again which was a real motivator to go.

Just moved into my first properly insulated house ever! (new build). Oh how I don't hark for the days living in Leichhardt when it was actually colder inside than it was out!

That said, I'd have winter over summer when its hot and sticky any day!

Cold here in Melbourne, too, but often sunny so less of the mis. Know what you all mean by terrible insulation though.
We have ducted heating on the ground floor which works quite well, though nowhere near as well as UK central heating. And it's bloody noisy.

No heating in the upper bedrooms, so haul an oil-filled radiator around. And this is a well-heeled area for renting!

I'm still quite enjoying it as well....but yes to log fires and the expense of winter, but I like wrapping up for a walk.

Plus Ozziebaby is nearly here and I think I am coping much better with being 9 months pregnant in the winter than I would in the summer.
