Is everyone on the bone marrow register?

My friend's DS has aplastic anemia and desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. No one in the family is a match as mum is Hong Kong Chinese and Dad is western which is making it much harder. If you are not on the register, please could you consider joining? It might just save someone's life. Thanks

If you are under the age of 30, register with Anthony Nolan
www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells

If you are over 30 years old, register with DKMS
www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now

Ps I have name changed for this post as it's fairly outing.

If you are on the bone marrow registry in another country are the searches done internationally.

Monsterpumpkins · 26/10/2021 09:39

I have been on the register for many years. Had further testing at one point but wasn't a match sadly.
Not advertised enough imo.

SpangoDweller · 26/10/2021 09:41

I am, and have been registered since a friend needed a (sadly unsuccessful) transplant when he was 20.

Thank you for raising awareness of this

Waahingwashingwashing · 26/10/2021 09:43

Sadly I’m not eligible due to a pre-existing condition.

spongedog · 26/10/2021 09:44

You can't be on the registers (nor Blood Donation) if you have been the recipient of human tissue. The change was introduced in 2012, so if you have previously donated, may not be aware of the change. Worth really checking all the fine print first. Each pack costs the charity approx £40 to send out.

Zarene · 26/10/2021 09:46

Yes I am!

Never been called up, though

I'm trying to persuade DH to do it too, as he's from an under-represented ethnic background, so might be particularly useful.

LaCerbiatta · 26/10/2021 09:49

Just registered. Don't know why I had never done it...

sarah20212021 · 26/10/2021 09:50

Much to my regret I'm not allowed to do so for health reasons but replying to give this valuable thread my support and a bump. Thank you to everyone who registers and donates if asked!

stardusty · 26/10/2021 17:57

Thanks for your comments everyone, it is definitely worth checking you are eligible before applying for a pack. I am on it too but am clearly not a match for my friend's DS. This was the biggest group of people I could think to ask to join!

I am on it although I can't give blood. People don't always realise that one doesn't cancel out the other.

gogohm · 26/10/2021 18:11

I tried to register but was told I'm too old, my DD's have though

WakeUpLockie · 26/10/2021 18:14

Honestly, because the thought makes me feel like I’m going to faint and grosses me out, BUT I am definitely about to go and research and get over it. I am not allowed to donate blood because I had a transfusion during a c section, and feel terribly mad at myself that I never gave blood while I could.

RandomMess · 26/10/2021 18:20

I'm on it, can't give blood anymore sadly Sad

weegiemum · 26/10/2021 18:22

I can't give blood or bone marrow due to a medical condition. Hoping this friend gets their donor.

RobinPenguins · 26/10/2021 18:23

I’ve actually just registered this month! I don’t really have any reason why I wasn’t before. Should have signed up years ago.

PolytheneRam · 26/10/2021 18:23

Yes. I waa identified as a potential match a couple of months ago, and this was confirmed last month. I haven't heard anything from Anthony Nolan Trust lately though. I'm wandering if they've decided it isn't an appropriate way of proceeding for the recipient.

PolytheneRam · 26/10/2021 18:23

Wondering. Sorry.

TheShockOfItAll · 26/10/2021 18:31

Me and DP are registered with A Nolan

Just realised you can sign up from 16y so have forwarded a link to DD

Yes I am on the register and was texted by them as a possible match earlier in the year. I didn't have to donate though- a closer match must have been found
OrlandointheWilderness · 26/10/2021 18:50

Just registered.

stardusty · 26/10/2021 21:52

Thanks for supporting the register, even if you are not eligible to donate. Fingers crossed they a suitable donor signs up soon.

I’m registered. My friend was in a similar situation as yours regards ethnicity. They found a match in the USA so don’t lose hope xx

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/10/2021 22:08

I registered with AN when I was much younger.

Can I assume I am still registered?

RavingAnnie · 26/10/2021 22:31

I'm not allowed either.

Postdatedpandemic · 26/10/2021 22:35

I am, but as a woman who has been pregnant I am unlikely to ever be used as I carry antibodies that make rejection more likely. Unfortunately men are better donors.
