How to find a Carer/(non agency) for my Father in law

Hi, I'm trying to find a private carer that can come in daily to care for my father from 7-5 whilst my husband and I are at work. He has been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour and is starting to need help daily with getting around etc. He is 68 and lost his wife aged 52 really unexpectedly 3 weeks ago of Pancreatitis.
The agency rates are extortionate and we don't want to put dad in a home as we feel the short time he probably has left should be at home in familiar surroundings with his family.
Does anyone know of where I could look?

We employ a private carer for my 94 year old mum. It works really well. We also have a weekend carer. Her main carer was recommended by a friend who had employed her as a live in carer for her husband. She found her by advertising on Gumtree. I found the weekend carer on a website run by a local authority support network. They take adverts from people who want to be personal assistants. You have to register to get access to the list and then you can contact anyone you think is suitable. Age UK will advise you if there is anything similar in your area.

We also have 2 other occasional carers, one recommended by our weekend carer and the other from the website. All 4 are brilliant and my mum, who has advanced dementia and needs every sort of care, is very happy.

It's hard to be sure you can trust anyone to look after people who are so vulnerable, but I don't see you could be totally sure about anyone, either from an agency or in a residential home.

We employ her main carer on a monthly salary and pay her tax, NI etc through a payroll company and she has a contract of employment. We pay the others carers on an hourly basis.

I would also suggest getting social services involved as you may well need equipment. To help move him around. I lost my husband to this and i needed 2 carers twice a day to help wash and dress him and put him to bed as he couldn't do anything for himself. I also had to have a carer there all the time when I wasn't there. Have you contacted your local hospice? We used Marie Curie and they arranged equipment to come in at very short notice. Macmillan may also be able to help. I also hope you can get good non agency carers. I was not wonderfully impressed with the agency I used due to poor management rather than poor staff.
