Sperm donor - legal side

Hi,
My partner and I plan on trying to conceive at home through the use of an online sperm bank, donor is anon until the child is 18 and has no rights to the child. I understand that as the birth mother I will be legal parent to the child however where does my partner stand? We are not married, nor will we be at the time of conception should it be successful. I've read there are no automatic rights in this situation for my partner, my question is how have others gone about the non-birthpartner becoming the childs legal parent? Is it a lengthly process and can it only be done following the birth of the child?

I know this isn’t what you asked, but if I were you I’d get married ASAP and then conceive. You’re presumably planning to be joined to her anyway by the bonds of parenthood, and it makes the whole situation simpler.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Due to the circumstances of the donation and (cylce/ovulation times) we are unable to get married before conception - I understand you must give 29 days notice to get married?

That’s a pity. As I understand it it’s more difficult to exclude the donor’s parental rights if you’re not married to your partner at time of conception.

From my understanding the donor has waived all parental rights as it is through on official sperm bank?

I had fertility treatment with donor eggs and as far as I am aware the donor has no legal rights at all (my treatment was unsuccessful).

In terms of being married I would have said (please check this) the significant time is when the baby is born, not when they are conceived.

Good luck, hope it goes well.
