As the woman who went through a red light at a pedestrian crossing almost running over my wheelchair bound mother had one on and only her eyes showing?

She over took a car that had already stopped almost hit my mother and sister, stopped then sped off again.
Thankfully the whole thing was caught on traffic cameras and was witnessed and the police are involved.

But is it illegal to drive with 99% of your head covered??

It would be like driving at night in sunglasses, stupid and dangerous.
If it is not illegal it bloody well should be.

  • sorry to hear about the incident with your mother - but since when did people have vision out of their ears, noise of mouth??
RunawayWife · 16/05/2010 18:36

But surly it obstructs some of your vision????

Sounds like she was just a bad driver.

I can't see why covering your head would mean you can't drive. Unless she had covered her eyes.

This is a bit of an odd and possibly inflammatory post - although I can see why you would be upset at the near-miss.

Also what ever she was dressed in she clearly should not be driving as she is a bloody muppet

oh, a burqa..
would think it foolish due to peripheral vision but probably not illegal unless you are in belgium!

RunawayWife · 16/05/2010 18:38

But she had on one that has the kind of mesh over the eyes, surly that Would obstruct her Vision????

Please don't get me wrong, I strongly believe a person should have the right to choose how they dress, If she had been wearing a hat with a vail on I would have said the same.

Having netting over your eyes, or anything else that obstructs a clear view should be illegal

I'm Muslim and have driven in hejab with no worries - in fact, I think it is easier for me than some of the people who have emo fringes covering one eye or similar! No hair to worry about!

I don't think driving in niqab would affect vision but I definately think a burqa with a mesh over the eyes would

Having said that though, I very very rarely see burqa clad women - its mainly just hejab with the odd niqab

Are you sure it was a burqa?

RunawayWife · 16/05/2010 18:50

Pussin, I am sorry if I have the called it the wrong thing.

Lady was head to toe in long black dress and had head covered apart from eyes that had a mesh over them.

I just feel anything that covers the eyes should not be allowed when driving.

She stopped the car got so got a fair look at what she had on then she sped off.

She is clearly a very bad driver and would be even if she was wearing a suit/bikini/wedding dress.... she siad I did not see the light, then sped off

Mum lives in a very muti cultural area so we see lots of ladies with head scarfs and various coverings including the full head to tow just eyes showing.

Never seen a fully covered lady driving though, so I wondered if it was because it is against the law.

Very very sorry If I sounded in any way informatory.

Runaway - honestly, no offence taken. Even I have problems keeping up with all the terminology for what women wear in Islam

You are right, a burqa is the eye mesh and I'm in full agreement with you - it should not be worn whilst driving - v unsafe imho

The fact that she legged it is also very poor form...am on your behalf!
