Any Horsey friends that can give me advise on a loan agreement

Had a lady approach me to loan our pony, she want to keep it at a riding school on working livery terms.

Will a general loan agreement work with this arrangement as it seems there is two fingers in the equation with very different needs for the pony.

I know the school is reputable and the lady who wants to loan is very knowledgeable as she has her own on working livery at the yard.

Just seems like its a bit complicated and not sure how much protection I would have.

Any advise please.

5 think I would want to see the loan arrangement that the your loaner will have with the yard - how much work the pony will be expected to do, what level of rider will ride her and who is responsible for calling the vet and things like that. My dd;s pony is on working livery, and the agreement we sign is very copmprehensive. i would also if I wre you, want the right to pop in occasionally just to be sure you were happy witht he arrangement.

Have you seen the sample loan agreement the British Horse Society have? Also, if you are a Gold member they have a free legal helpline. Leaflet on loaning. Sample loan agreement.

Thanks snorris. Yep downloaded the sample loan agreement, it only really refers to you and one other. I am sure the insurers will kick it in to touch once they see how many people are involved. Just wondered if there is anyone who has had this sort of arrangement or a legal beagle that could tell me how to to about it. Not a member of BHS.

Seeker, I will have to put the things you mention into the contract agreement.

Shoeing - e.g., my horse is barefoot and I'd have a blue fit if someone shod her! What are your rules?

Because it's working livery I'd put something in there about tack - who is responsible for cleaning/wear & tear. Obviously the loanee will look after the tack - but if the horse is being used by miscellaneous people - they won't give a monkeys.

Who is responsible for dentist/osteopath visits?

It might sound petty but I'd also put something in there about "haircuts". Imagine rolling up to find his mane hogged? I once nipped up to the yard after getting out of hospital to find my nag had been given a very short mane & tail haircut! I was far from amused.

blimey skihorse, I would die if he was hogged.
