How do I legally change my name after marriage?

Hi all, I got married a little while ago and would like to change my name legally to my husbands name. I have looked online and there’s a lot of stuff outlined to do but some of it seems conflicting and I can’t work out how to do it. I have adhd and just can’t make sense of all the information. I need a step by step guide of what to do first and foremost and then what to do following on from that. I would be so grateful for any help x

You don't need to do anything that is a general name change.

If you want a passport/driving licence/bank account/work email address etc in your new name then you need to apply to each of those places individually following their specific processes and using your marriage certificate.

You don’t need to do anything. You can apply for a new passport in your married name, you send them your marriage certificate. Same with the bank, when I did it I just needed to go in to a branch with my marriage certificate and that’s it, might be able to do it digitally these days.
My work also needed a scan of my marriage certificate to change my name on the system.
For anything else you can just start using your husband’s name.

As above. Your marriage certificate is proof of the name change. Just follow each individual entities instructions for changing your name.

So I don’t need to do anything to make it a legal official change across the board just update my current documents etc with my marriage certificate?

There's no special resister of names people use. You don't have to register your name change anywhere , you just tell people that's your new name. Anyone who wants evidence such as DVLA can be shown your marriage certificate.

Yep!

Thank you to everyone who has posted, this is so much easier to understand than the Gov website guidance! It’s our anniversary soon so I hope to surprise him by changing it officially, I wasn’t sure I was going to and he hasn’t pressured me to do it but I know he will be happy about it :)

Correct. There is no official changing of name process. Just the option to change your name on various documentation. Which isn't quite the same thing.
