Finding out date of birth of someone

Apart from Companies House and potentially social media, how would someone find out someones date of birth? Ie a stranger.
To be clear. I don't want the how to. I know someone has found out a relatives date of birth and I'm befuddled as to how they knew/know (as there is no companies house entry and no social media). Ditto their name and address but at this point in time it's the DOB that's bugging me the most.

Electoral roll

Electoral roll.

Someone may have them on a family tree on a website.

Depending on where you are it can be very easy - for example for £15 a day you can go to the records centre in Edinburgh or the Mitchell library in Glasgow and look up any Scottish birth, death or marriage record since 1855.

English records are more difficult but some areas are much easier than others

I never thought of the electoral roll. I just googled and they'd have to visit the council offices and look them up. Maybe this person did that. Thanks.

You just go on Find My Past and search for a name by approximate birth year. Then buy as many birth certificates as you need and by process of elimination find the right person.

This person is tight, I doubt they'd do anything that costs money

If you subscribe to Gene's Reunited you can look up births marriages and deaths think it is up to about 2007 can't find out if they are planning to update. I often do it for friends.

And what info does Genes Reunited need to find a date of birth?

Free BMD is a good on line source for older people if you know their name, rough location and rough date of birth. You can get a list and then just work through. It’s not so good for recent years though.

I do family history as a hobby - its a lot easier than you realise to find things like this out.

Just a name and year ( approx) and area of birth. You need to buy the birth certificate to get exact dates.

It really is easier than you think, as someone else said. It's a tenner for a certificate I think.
