Company that we’ve paid money to has gone into liquidation

A company we’ve paid money to has gone into voluntary liquidation. We have reason to believe they took our money after the point they had started the process of liquidation, and we are trying to get some legal advice- but every website I’ve looked at seems to have lawyers who specialise in helping the companies going through the liquidation process, does anyone know where I can find someone to help us as a customer of the business? I know we are bottom of the pile when it comes to getting any money back, but it’s a lot of money, and we’re desperate! Thanks

@RoseGoldEagle
Did you pay by credit card?
How much was the amount?

The credit card protection is great if it applies to you. Also, look at your home insurance policy. There is often basic legal advice/cover included. I used mine to get compensation for something a few years ago.

If you call the liquidator they will advise. I bet the money isn't there anymore though- either taken by directors or used to pay the liquidator.

Unfortunately you won't come higher up the list of creditors - if they were in the process of liquidation it's misconduct when considering disqualifying the directors, but realistically it's highly unlikely likely you'll get your money back from the liquidation process, and if you do it will take a very very long time.

You could try a chargeback if you used a credit or debit card - but I'm sensing you might have bank transferred? In which case speak to your bank.

Thanks everyone. Yeah it was a bank transfer unfortunately, kicking ourselves now. Didn’t think of contacting bank as assumed that wouldn’t get us anywhere but I guess wouldn’t hurt to ask. We’ll look at our home insurance too, thanks
