Bank restricts access to bank account

So long story short

Disabled Single mum with hypertension, panic attacks and palpitations of 2 young kids

Lost job months ago

Things are very hard
My parents& family decided to send me money to help pay bills and groceries and medications etc

£1500 was sent but the money was seized by the bank since Saturday
They asked a few questions like who the sender is to me and where the sender got the money from & what I am going to use the money for and that once answered, they will reply with an hour

They said I should answer all the question I can etc

I did answer the questions I could and I still do not have access to my money

My elderly parents sent lots of documents of their means of income from their properties which they rent out etc which I sent to the bank today

The bank also asked for chats with date etc with sender of the money. I got screenshots which I sent to bank today over 2 hours ago.

I am starving and kids too
My BP gone through the roof
Still no access to my money.

What right had the bank to do this to me? Holding my money and restricting access to my account for over 48 hours.

What else can I do? I am in tears here
My parents work hard for their money & I have always worked hard for mine until unemployed few months ago

I can understand the OP's frustration, but the fact that she consistently refused to name the country of origin is suss to me anyway.

Good to hear it's sorted though.

Can all those you sent private messages to Mumsnet reporting my post come out here publicly and explain their reasoning for reporting my post

Stop being a coward and show yourselves here and stop hidding behind PM to Mumsnet.

I did not solicit for money at all I asked for advise not money.

Hi there I didn't report your post but I have reported posts before.

If you're going to ask for people to out themselves - you first.

Wow

You all should stay away from monzo bank

#closetourmonzoaccnow

I have just stumbled on a Facebook page called STAY AWAY FROM MONZO BANK

I am shocked beyond words at what I am reading there. Take a look and close your monzo acc if you have one

I ❤️ my Monzo account. Won’t be closing it thanks.

Same here.
I get that this was stressful OP but it sounds like you have a lot going on so it might just be best if you drew a line under this, learned from it and moved on now.
Not everyone is going to like every company, you can vote with your feet but trying to start a campaign against them wont achieve anything and probably just frustrate you further

ANY bank would have flagged that transaction and blocked the funds. ANY one. It positively screamed dodgy. Any bank whose money laundering safeguards didn't pick that up would be in some heavy trouble in short order.

IAmThe1AndOnly · 24/04/2024 14:13

Monzo are well known for closing accounts, but the reality is that there will be a reason why they do, every time. except a bank can close an account it out having to disclose the reason, so to the person whose account is being closed it’s easy to take to a facebook group to start a hate campaign and protest innocence.

And it may not even be anything like money laundering or crime. There are numerous reasons why a bank can close your account.

Personally I wouldn’t have my main account with an online only bank, and I don’t have a Monzo account anyway. But it’s not realistic to think that a dodgy looking transaction should be treated differently just because the recipient says they’re in a difficult position. Due diligence has to be followed regardless, and that transaction would have been flagged regardless of the bank it was paid to.

The Halifax account was likely different because it’s your main account, and because you have regular payments going into and out of the account. But this was an account which was pretty much inactive until a payment was made to it through a 3rd party service.

Follow up

Just to let you all know that that Monzo upheld my complaint and paid me compensation and issued an apology for the manner in which I was treated

My complaint and post here was not about not allowing the bank to follow due process of checking payments coming into an account or country etc but was about the manner in which I was treated & they have agreed it was bad and apologised & compensated me.

You can if you name-change in your Settings, and then change your name again in your 'Your Username' box on the thread. Maybe you can't do it on the app, but it's definitely possible on my laptop using the desk top site.

Just read through the comments seen this was a while ago but going through the same thing!
but with Santander all my income and direct debits get paid into this bank and I do many transfers from this to my other bank account what I just use for everyday spending..A payment of £945 was made to my bank account from a personal account someone I knew who had brought a few pieces of furniture off me as I have upgraded I then transferred this into my other account for my everyday spending. The next day I got a text saying we need to speak to you urgently and account access has been blocked… I called them they asked me if I knew the person and why the money was transferred to my account I advised they owed it me from purchases how do I know them etc… they advised my bank will be frozen until the investigation team has looked into this! Anyone know how long it takes to get unblocked? Luckily they sed any money paid into my account what has been paid in many times before wages benefits etc I can call and get this transferred to my other account or draw out at a branch but the only issue I have is the direct debits I pay are all on this account? Why are banks doing this I understand if was like £5000 but it’s £945!!
