What are my rights to compensation re cancelled flight?

Booked direct flight to US ages ago.

Checked in on line and paid for upgrade.

6 hours later receive e mail saying flight cancelled and booking had been transferred to indirect flight, arriving at final destination 6 hours letter than originally planned.

Accepted this option due to panic as needed to be at destination asap /lack of alternative option.

Internal flight delayed and eventually arrived 91/2 hours late. No upgrade given on internal flight.

I’ve contacted airline and they’ve apologised and offered 5000 executive points.

I resisted the temptation to reply asking them if they were joking; I now need to find out exactly what my legal rights are.

Can anyone advise me or direct me somewhere please?

TIA

It depends on the reason your initial flight was cancelled. If it was the airline's fault, you are entitled to £520 compensation. However, if it was not their fault (e.g. the cancellation was due to weather), you are not entitled to any compensation.

No reason was given as to why it was cancelled.

If you type in easyjet compensation or easyjet expenses then the pages come up detailing exactly what you can and can't claim for and how to do it. Can you get the same to come up for the airline you used?

In my experience they absolutely won't offer or tell you about compensation but if you are eligible and apply they tend to pay up fast. Not always - am currently locked in a dispute with EasyJet who are claiming my delay is because of an air traffic control strike even though the flight was cancelled because they didn't have the crew before the strike began.

Thank you for the posts. I've been on the CBA website but been unable to get through on line. I've now spoken with a helpful person at CEDR, the arbitration charity that the airline should refer me to when it gets my e mail saying "bog off with your offer of 5000 points".
He's suggested I wait for the airline to reply before engaging them (it's free; they are a charity)
