Really poor tiling job and disputing payment - now found company is dissolved so where do I stand?

I'm hoping someone can help here as I want to be fair but also am really unhappy with the work.

Had a new bathroom fitted and installed to tune of about 6k for everything. Supplied and fitted by independent trade. The fixtures, fittings and new plumbing work all seems ok but the tiling (fully tiled walls and floor) is terrible. Tiles are lipping, uneven, not aligned properly. I raised some concerns as soon as realised - a couple of tiles which were really awful were chipped out and replaced but they are still not right. This also means the sealant looks terrible as is uneven because of tiling. At end of job I again had them back and they've done what they can but it's not to a professional standard. They've blamed my tiles and walls for the misalignment - but The work has included re boarding so I would have expected this to correct any walls being out and have measured the tiles and they are spot on.

Have had another trade out to look and they say only way to correct is for all tiles to come off, walls sorted and then whole job done again - to tune of 2k plus i'd need to buy tiles again.

So - the balance at present is 3 k - where do I stand paying this? Have offered 1k and we'd still be out of pocket but they are clearly not happy with this and saying need to be paid so they can pay wages and they underquoted me in first place.

This is now further complicated as in digging around to see if others have had problems have found the company was actually dissolved prior to works starting though my invoices still have company name on it. So does this make any difference?

Please can anyone help? I have never been i. situation where i'm so unhappy with work done and disappointed with what was supposed to be a lovely new bathroom - but equally want to be fair. The quote isn't broken down into what is actual tiling costs and what is other fitting costs. I can see what is fixtures (all paid for) and the fitting is just the remainder.

Who is your contract with?

if it’s the limited company and that has been dissolved then it doesn’t legally exist any more

I had similar a couple of years ago. The company has dissolved so the contract isn't legally binding so you can simply refuse to pay or only pay what you think is reasonable. They were also trading illegally so if they threaten legal action they're trying to scare you into paying.

I'm still having trouble with the job they did (leaky joints, things not quite fitted correctly so breaking) so definitely hold back some payment in case this comes up.

I refused to pay the fitters, they threatened legal action. I sent a list of all the problems I'd encountered with them and their work and said any future contact would need to be through my solicitor. I've not heard from them again.

well the invoice is from the ltd company which is dissolved although now i'm digging the account i've paid some of the invoice to is a personal account not a business account

shall i just reiterate we are only willing to
pay 1k

shall i say we know company is dissolved?

Stick to your guns. If you think the job is worth £1k then offer this and no more and detail why you think it's only worth this amount (shoddy work, replacement tiles, anything else they've done wrong, missed days...everything they've done wrong).

I'd say you know the company has dissolved. If their invoices are in this company's name then they're trading illegally regardless of which account you paid money to.

Good luck! It's tough coming up against blaggers like this but stick at it!
