baby passport stolen. How worried should I be?

Kicking myself. Baby’s first passport and my new passport posted through door today at 3pm (according to tracking). We were home but didn’t hear them. We generally keep the outer door unlocked when we’re at home so passport would have been sat in the porch area.

Yodel delivered a parcel 15 mins after passport delivered. The driver opened the porch door and placed the parcel in the porch. We checked at 5 after seeing on the tracking that the passport was supposedly delivered. No passport. Yodel package there. It seems most likely that the yodel driver has taken the passports although of course can’t prove it. Two hour possible window for it to have gone missing. We’ve reported to police, contacted both delivery companies, spoken to passport office and are cancelling passports.

Someone in London now has my baby’s name, DOB and address (mine too of course). How worried do i need to be? I’m terrified that identity theft could dog him throughout his life now. Could this affect him in the future when he wants to open a bank account etc?

I wouldn’t be too worried, you can get lots of info about people on line if you want to

Starlightstarbright1 · 20/06/2023 21:54

Mine got lost in the post years ago . I had to report it to the police . I received a phone call from ? Border police but they basically said as I was white British - my passport had virtually no value.

no idea if that is reassuring but hopefully helps

Infusionist · 20/06/2023 21:55

Have you had it Comfirmed it was actually delivered? You say you’ve contacted the delivery company but but not that they replied.

We’ve just had a passport delivered by TNT where the online tracker said it had been delivered about 4 times before it actually was.

baloosbaloos · 20/06/2023 22:04

@Infusionist that’s really interesting, thanks. The online tracker shows a photo of our front door along with the delivery time and the driver’s signature so I assume it probably has been 🙁

@Starlightstarbright1 I’m very keen for reassurance atm so thanks! 😂 I thought maybe a baby passport might be useful to create a new identity?? (I don’t mind in the least if a little baby gets access to British citizenship that they wouldn’t otherwise have though, I don’t see how that takes anything away from my kid.) 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ my husband worries a lot about this sort of thing which doesn’t help!!

We didn’t have the pic, just a message saying delivered. So it sounds like a different situation, sorry!

pizzaHeart · 20/06/2023 22:13

Are you absolutely sure that it’s your front door?

pizzaHeart · 20/06/2023 22:14

I mean on the pic

fiftyandfat · 20/06/2023 22:15

You have reported them stolen?

baloosbaloos · 20/06/2023 22:16

@pizzaHeart yes 100%, rubbish plasterwork and all 🙁

We waited for my dds passport. Didn’t hear anything until a random text from a guy saying they had my parcel at X address. It was a 15 minute drive and 1 and half miles away that the delivery company randomly dumped through this guy’s postbox 🥴

Highlyflavouredgravy · 20/06/2023 22:21

You have to sign for a passport. I bet it wasn't actually delivered.

PlacidPenelope · 20/06/2023 22:21

I had to sign for my passport when it was delivered before they would hand it over, is that not the case with all couriers?

Lollipoplollie · 20/06/2023 22:22

My DC passport was delivered with the envelope completely ripped open a few weeks ago. Clearly someone in the delivery chain opened it as I saw TNT man put it through the door in that state and scarper. I have tried numerous times to contact TNT and Passport office about it but noone cares. I wonder if delivery person opened it, saw it was a child passort of little value and put it back in the envelope. I'm sure there's a real problem somewhere in the delivery chain with TNT but there's nowhere to raise it where anyone is interested. You used to have to sign for passports!

justasking111 · 20/06/2023 22:25

DS had his passport stolen, royal mail left an empty envelope. He notified passport office and the police. And ordered another one. No-one was that surprised.

dinmin · 20/06/2023 22:28

What makes you think it’s more likely the Yodel driver stole it than the person who supposedly delivered it?!

Not the case unfortunately

PlacidPenelope · 20/06/2023 22:35

Oh, that doesn't sound very secure.

LIZS · 20/06/2023 22:40

Dod the yodel deliverer not ring the bell or knock? Could the passports have been put elsewhere?

VisionsOfSplendour · 20/06/2023 22:48

Highlyflavouredgravy · 20/06/2023 22:21

You have to sign for a passport. I bet it wasn't actually delivered.

Is that new? I've had them put through the door before, most recently just at the end of last year

Could the envelope have fallen somewhere, the yodel delivery person would have to be extremely quick witted to see the envelope, register what it was, have a reason to steal it and nab it in a very short window of time

Would that be likely to happen?

baloosbaloos · 20/06/2023 22:54

@dinmin TNT delivery person delivers passports all the time, so he can’t make a habit of stealing them regularly!

@Lollipoplollie @justasking111 these tales of stolen passports are reassuring me, thanks

OP posts:
baloosbaloos · 20/06/2023 22:59

You don’t have to sign for them anymore, I checked on the website.

No knocking/ringing, the drivers all just open the porch door and put parcels in. The dog barks but she barks at everything.

We’ve looked everywhere, indoors, outdoors, under rugs, knocked on neighbours doors, etc etc. They’re not there!

I do find these stories of people’s passports being stolen and them NOT suffering harrowing consequences reassuring though, thanks 😂

You don't.. I didn't sign for mine last week.

My DH had to collect his from the delivery office because it had to be signed for and we weren’t home when it came.
this was 2 weeks ago.

Clymene · 21/06/2023 06:43

I don't know why some people have to sign. Maybe you asked for it to be delivered that way? I had a new one just out through the letterbox a few weeks ago
