Potentially fraud with dodgy landlord would like some input.

Hello hope everyone is well.

In 2021 me and my partner moved into a lovely one bed semi detached house in North London at not a bad price for renting in London. When moving in we discovered it was a building site the toilet was stripped out, no shower, boiler wasn’t working and there was a sleeping bag in the bedroom.

Lucky I worked fairly close so for two weeks we would go to the gym or my place of work for the toilet. I know…

Anyways after they fixed the problems things were fine for sometime until we got a knock on the door from the neighbours. It turned out that the landlords sister lived next door. At some point they detached the house into two, this is where it gets a bit weird.. I noticed that next door did not have a door number and our council tax was very high along with our other bills…

Could we of been paying their bills and council tax for two years?
We have been moved out of the property for around 1 years now.

I ran into the neighbours husband this week and the house was up for sale but the landlord was in a dispute within in his divorce due to there was no record of one of the addresses ( not sure what one).

Any advise would really be appreciated!!

sorry for the long story.

Thanks

Yes, sounds like economy with the truth by the landlord.
Go to the Local Authority and have a chat. They will have records of what your tax and next door’s tax should have looked like.
You might be able to sue LL for some kind of recompense for paying more council tax than you should have?
