Someone tried to run us over on a crossing

We are on holiday in USA so I assume rules are different than from where I live in U.K. we were on the crossing as were a bunch of other people but everyone else was Spanish, the driver let the Spanish people who were Infront of us cross and we were behind them be then attempted to run us over we had tk
jump out of his way!! My partner then began shouting at him as I’m heavily pregnant but even if I wasn’t how terrible this is, and he just shook his head like he didn’t care.

are laws / rules in USA different?
in the U.K. a crossing is where people cross the road, if anyone is on the crossing or waiting to cross then you have to stop and let them cross, they have right of way. We waited at the crossing until the cars stopped but it’s like this man only wanted to let people of his own over the road and not us.

what do I do? Do I contact police? If he had it hit us with his car would he have been in a lot of trouble?

You know you can just click follow?

Not since they launched the updated site. Loads of other functionalities no longer work for me either.

But thanks.

I'm also wondering about the Spanish thing. How did he know everyone's ethnicity? Why are you so sure they're Spanish?

That’s not even the law in the UK, you are not required to stop if pedestrians are waiting to cross. You’re only required to give way to pedestrians who are already on the crossing.

Say what now? I've been stopping at zebra crossings and I didn't need to? This could affect my future judgements!

FawnDrench · 08/08/2022 21:09

But did you actually see the whites of his eyes?
Also, no photo so it obviously didn't happen.

I'd get Interpol involved at the very least - or the CIA..

MarshaMelrose · 08/08/2022 21:11

Hey, it IS true @Shade17 . And pedestrians, aren't allowed to loiter. I've seen little kids loitering and their parents don't hurry them up. I'm wondering now if they can all be prosecuted. Maybe best I just don't stop for any probable shillyshallyers now I have the choice.

Thanks for the post. 🙂

Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2). Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.27 Jul 2022

Rule 19
Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2). Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

So if they are already on the crossing, you MUST stop, otherwise you don't have to. Should means is not the law to stop.

I learnt in Paris never ever to assume anyone would stop for you 😂my French friend when driving in the U.K. has to have a lesson in the fact we do stop and we also don’t honk the horn for any delay or immediately when the traffic lights turn green

wallpoppy · 08/08/2022 21:36

They were Spanish? A load of Spanish people who just happened to be In the US crossing the road with you?

Or do you actually mean that they were speaking Spanish? That doesn’t make them Spanish, any more than Americans speaking English are English. Or do you ACTUALLY mean they weren’t white? Again, very unlikely to be Spanish.

This is such a weird story.

laws in the US vary from state to state, but in general are much less friendly to pedestrians in the road and more friendly to cars. So Jaywalking (crossing the road without a green pedestrian light) is an offence in some states or cities.

I would not want any contact with the USA police if I did not have to.

be glad you are not injured and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

This. Even where there is a crossing alot of states also require a green light unlike here.

Sometimes I read a thread's first post and think - no way will the OP be back. This is one of those threads.

Minimalme · 08/08/2022 22:14

Are you pregnant with twins op?

Dartmoorcheffy · 07/08/2022 23:35

Were the others dressed in flamenco outfits and you were wearing bowler hats and waving a union Jack??

Grin

Brilliant

Willowthewispy · 08/08/2022 23:17

I wouldn't call the local police op. President Biden is your man sure he will want all the details 🤔
