Time for probate?

How long is it taking at the moment?

I put the IHT forms in at the beginning of June, paid the IHT, and then applied for probate end of June. HMRC sent me a request for more IHT today so I phoned to query — they’d made a mistake. They are sending the forms to the probate office today.

They said up to 8 weeks now — is it really this long? What does the process entail? I find this whole thing totally obscure and mysterious and frustrating.

I’m back again. Still waiting. The case was put on stop at some point but the query has been resolved. I phoned for an update after the required 8 weeks and the person I spoke to couldn’t tell me anything at all re timeframe.

I know it’s how long is a piece of string, but how long has it taken recently?

It’s mad when I did my mums probate I sent the forms off Dec 30th 2019 and got back the probate certificate February 5th 2020 and I did it myself
Now my dads just passed away I have to do the full inheritance tax form even though it’s way under the threshold it’s because there was a lifetime interest possession for my dad
I’m paying a fixed fee for a solicitor to do it for me as I don’t want to mess it up

A close relative died October 2020, everything is being dealt with by a different branch of the family (her DH was my relative) so I have no idea what's happening, however I would be amazed if me or at least DD haven't been left at least a token amount. There's nothing online in terms of probate and the house hasn't gone on the market so I'm assuming they're still waiting for probate, even if they were quick off the mark it's been around 8 or 9 months.

It took from November to august to get letters of administration for my relatives estate, using a solicitor and no IHT the excuse was covid!
