What info does a prisoner number tell a solicitor?

Just wanted to know if any solicitors can access a prisoners number or is it only certain ones?

Apart from the standard name/ DOB/ address kind of info, what other info will a prisoners number tell a solicitor?

Will it have a record of health checks, dr visits etc?

Prisoner number is usually just for ID purposes - solicitors wouldn't automatically have access to that info - it would just allow them to write to them for example without getting mixed up with another prisoner by the same name

As above - it doesn't indicate anything, just makes communication with a prison much easier. There isn't a national database where you can search for info

In my experience it’s just a way of the prison service directing post to the right prison.

Hi - literally my job, it tells you nothing! Prisoners have 2 ID numbers, both do slightly different things. I use it for any correspondence and it can be used to draw up electronic records if permission has been granted to them. On the flipside however if a solicitor has the prison number it's not difficult to get information if you want it.

Its not just for post purposes however, the NOMS number (A1234BC format) is used across the prison, probation and HQ for record keeping and those records can be accessed by the majority of staff without much accountability. The exception is in fact medical records which need the prisoners permission to disclose.
