Employment contract withdrawn due to corona - what are our rights?

DH was headhunted.

Asked to start at new firm 23rd March. Notice handed to employer end January, leave date 16th March. DH and I booked a Mon-Fri holiday for the week between jobs.

Clearly it all went got a up. Left only job last Friday. Then the world went mad, we didn't go away. No news was good news from new firm. Job that can easily be managed WFH so we assumes that would happen.

Friday 20th, 4pm - flurry of 3 phone calls from new firm. They definately want DH working for them, but can't get executives to agree given this is a non-essential business in current climate.

Phone call 6pm tonight. He it's going to be at least a month before he can start. Most likely it will be September tho - 6 months.

So legally, do we have any leg to stand on? DH has had a contract drawn up and has an employee number. But it wasn't signed. [Sigh]. I assume we can't do anything.

If they employed him, Boris would pay 80% of his salary. If he had stated at his old firm, he'd be on full pay. But instead he is unemployed. It's pants. We have both cried a lot.

Phone ACAS tomorrow and they will help. He might have a case given the immediacy of cancelling the role versus his start date. But going legal will mean he will likely never actually work there.

Has he pleaded to them in terms of the unfairness and leaving him jobless?
