Company passed my details in error to a debt collection agency

Hello,

Just looking for some advice. I received a phone call today from a debt collection agency claiming I owed company X. I have had dealings with company X before but was taken aback as I didn't believe I owed them anything. I took the phone call in front of my colleagues and the whole thing was quite upsetting and humiliating.

I spoke on the phone to company X and it turns out there is a customer with a similar name to mine and they had accidentally passed on my contact details rather than hers. They were very apologetic but I suppose I am just wondering what steps I should be taking now. Clearly there has been a GDPR breach, how will I know that they will report this? Anything else I need to consider?

Follow the company's complaints procedure and if you are still dissatisfied with their response, make a complaint to the appropriate ombusman or other ADR the company are signed up to.
