Joint policy I need to cash in and he ran off 20 years ago

My exH and I had a joint ‘lost’ Guaranteed min cost end policy with that I uncovered and requested to cash my half in. It is being held in an interest free account. It matured a couple of years ago. The company is insisting on him also sending a letter requesting his half. Problem is that he abandoned me and our 2 small children over 20 years ago and I believe he went overseas. No contact since apart from through solicitors for the divorce. My diivorce was done on the cheap because I was a struggling young single mum at the time, so I suspect that things were not sorted out as they should have been. Plus we didn’t have much money to sort out back then. Fast forward to now and I have no clue where he is but I know he is now really wealthy and I doubt he would co-operate (the policy is only for a few thousand pounds). I really don’t want to have to track him down and contact him as this would be very disruptive and stressful for my family (and probably his). So does anyone know whether I really do have to get his agreement for me to get my half of the money? Is there any way around this? Thanks in advance!

I would keep pestering them if I were you until they come up with a solution.
