Can an overseas Court pursue me for costs?

My ex is now resident in Germany and has petitioned for divorce there. That's fine. We have no DC, neither of us owns properties etc so should all straightforward. Originally he asked if I would pay half the costs. I said I'm not in a position to do so right now so he said ok he'd pay. He's the one that wants the divorce now, I'm not bothered when it happens so if he wants it he can pay! Only now he's backtracking and saying he won't! Can the divorce Court in Germany come after me for the fees etc?

It's hard to imagine how you could be held responsible for court fees for filings not made by you. Presumably he would have to pay the court fees up front and then get a judgement against you for any sums you might owe. If the court did find you liable for some of these costs, it would not come after you directly. Your ex would have to apply to a court here to execute on the judgement.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in family law or EU law, this is just a general description of how this would typically work in a civil law context.

Ok thanks that's really helpful. I suspected the answer would be along those lines but I wanted to check. He was abusive to me and has been sending some quite nasty emails (I haven't responded to any).
