Shit! Child benefit

I have 3 dc and 1 step dc. I earn £15k per year.

Dp earns £54k per year.

I've hugely fucked up. We have lived together just over 2 years. I thought his salary and pension contributions were basically approx £50k they aren't, clearly. He got his p60 through yesterday and, he basically got a bonus at Christmas which obviously I knew about but didn't think. I don't know why. Clearly I'm a moron.

What do I do about the child benefit? Would they accept a payment plan. Or do I just opt out and hope for the best.

Anyone know how this works?

It’s not just phoning them up though, is it? He will have to complete a complicated self assessment tax return, which is already late - “only” £100 fine providing its done by the end of April; after that, it goes up more.
The current arrangement for claiming and then paying back child benefit is ridiculously over-complicated. We fell very much into the same trap. I claimed, as I always had done, having no idea exactly what DH earned - about £3k over the threshold - and he’s awful at this kind of paperwork, didn’t think / didn’t notice. Good luck with untangling the mess.
