I want to give my son's father figure parental rights

My sons biological father did a runner when I was 9 weeks pregnant with him and we have not heard from him since. My daughters father has brought my son up since the moment he was born. The problem I am having is that we have not been together for 3 years now but he has proven to be a fantastic dad to my son and has still had him every weekend since we broke up and treats him no less then his own. Well I would like him to have the same rights as me in regards to my son as he has for my daughter. I am the only one on my sons birth certificate but I have no idea how to go about it all. Help please

You can't. You'd have to marry him, then apply to the court for parental responsibility for him. As you're separated I presume that's a non-starter.

This is from the government website.

My DP's mothers remarried and her new husband adopted DP age 6, over 20 years ago). They are his legal, formal parents. They needed the birth father's permission.

Outside of marriage, I don't know if there's a legal process you can follow.

I really wouldn't do this, especially as you're no longer together. If things turned sour in future, would you still want him to have equal responsibility as you and be able to take him as and when he pleases?
